Howelsen Hill

There are hours of riding on Howelsen, all in the town of Steamboat. For starters, ride to the base of the area, and start on the trails near the stable. Climb up about 1/4 mile south of ski lifts (left looking up hill). There are several ways, just keep going up, and you will top out at the X-C loops (1-6, the yellow trails on the attached map). I like to climb up the "Lupine Trail" to the quarry, then cut across and come down one of the many trails (MGM is a favorite, but there are plenty). There is a fire road to the top of Emerald Mtn and lots of trails on both sides.
Summary: There are so many different trails and routes to be taken, the possibilities are almost endless. Lots of variety on trails ranging from tight trees (MGM), rocky downhills (Lupine Trail), long and flowy single track (Bluffs Loop), very fun and challenging trails. The hardest part is getting to the actual singletrack but once you are there the ride down is a blast. Just go ride and explore!
Recommended Route: Easiest (that's an understatement) route to singletrack is to start on Blackmer Drive trailhead from 13th Street. Starts off on a fire road, but you will soon see trails branching away on the sides. You can start from Howelson Hill by the baseball fields too, but you are in for some sick climbs to get up to the top.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Have not ridden any others yet, but have heard Mad/Spring Creek is fun.
