Miner''s Creek to Wheeler
1 reviews
 4 of 5

There are many ways to do this trail including starting from Breckenridge. This is the Frisco loop. The trail is very technical with lots of climbing. The down on the Copper side is very smooth however for a nice fast downhill. Take the Mt Royal trail off the bike trail up and east toward Breckenridge. There are a lot of turnoffs, but if you keep left on the ridge you will eventually empty out at the Peaks trail. Take the peaks trail to the Copper Mountain turnoff. There is a sign on your right giving you the distance (at this point nine miles) to Copper Mountain. The trail meanders up a very technical trail with lots of rocks. After a couple of miles you will see another sign telling you that Wheeler trail and Copper are six miles away. This is where the real climbing starts. You will ride up till you see a saddle just above treeline. From there you think you will start down and that Copper might be below you...it''s not. That is Breckenridge. Keep riding alone the trail that goes right at the top of the saddle till you reach another saddle. From here you will see Copper Mountain down below. The views are awsome of Copper, Breck, and Keystone. From the top you have to pick your way around to get through some rocky sections. There are caryns placed so you won''t get too lost. Not only that, you can see where the trail leads out of these sections. You will then head down to treeline and to Copper Mountain, intersecting with a Wheeler trail which can lead you to the top of Breck if you choose. Taking the trail down will lead you to Wheeler and then to the bike trail. Just take a nice leasurly ride on the trail back to the parkinglot. It''s been a long ride.

Summary:
This is a trail that will challenge the best of riders. Prepare for a long day on the mountain. This is one of my favorite trails simply for the views at the top. You can see most of summit county with a view that few will ever see.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Peaks trail. It can be reached from ski hill road or from Frisco near the miners creek trail. Coming from breckenridge it is a fairly easy down hill ride, it is very technical in some spots.
