Webster Pass

4 of 5
The climb to Webster Pass is along a Jeep road. Right after the intersection, there is a quater mile or so of moderate climbing. Nothing technical, just your average 4x4 trail, well packed, a few loose rocks. The locals have put down gravel during their summer repairs, so there are spots where you might be aware of. Pass through the forest service gates and the climb levels off. Follow the main road as the next section has a few side trails/paths leading to private properties. Just past some private cabins, bear right and cross Snake Creek. Most the time it's no more than hub deep. The road angles up again after the creek crossing, but continues to be moderately easy. At approximately 3.6 mi, there is an intersection that says Deer Creek Rd. This is actually the trailhead for Radical Hill (3934.080 N 10551.57 W). Bear left across the Snake one more time, and start the real climb on the switchbacks. Your only real difficulty will be altitude. At 5.0miles, the summit of Webster Pass, there is a T intersection. To the south, is Handcart Gulch (rating 5) which descends on a narrow shelf road towards US285. To the east is the spectacular Red Cone trail. Red Cone is one way, descending off the cone down to Webster Pass. To the west, across the Snake River Valley, you can make out Radical Hill trail. The radical part is obvious as you see it cling to the steep mountainside near the ridge.

Zero your trip meter at the Montezuma Firehouse. Then proceed through town and you will see signs leading to Webster Pass and Deer Creek. At the 1.0 mile mark, turn left at the intersection of FR 285 (Webster Pass) and FR 5 (Deer Creek Rd).
Summary: The view from the top makes this climb worth it. Montezuma is a good launching point for several high-alpine routes. Start at 10,900ft in Montezuma, and climb to the pass at 12,600ft. This is Colorado high country. Rocks, tundra, wind, and incredible scenery. Mind you it's not a singletrack cruise through aspen groves, the constant climbing will make you work for every foot of elevation. You have to share the road with the dirt bikes and 4x4s, but most of 'em are pretty considerate; pulling over or asking if you have enough water; mostly they can't believe someone would do this without a motor. Take in the view from the top, as you lay there gasping for air. Bring lots of water, and extra layers. Even in August the windchill will cool you down quickly. The downhill is pretty fast, just beware of loose gravel in spots.
Recommended Route: up, up, and up then bomb the downhill. If you're an animal go down the other side and come back up.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Deer Creek Rd, Glacier Mountain, Peru Creek, Middle/North Forks of the Swan. Gonzo animals will enter the "Montezuma's revenge" race - multiple laps over these passes up to 14,000 ft.
