Troy Built

This trail was scouted, laid out, and built by Troy Schneer of the BLM. It's all singletrack and it's all fun. There is a brief slickrock section, challenging negotiations, rocks, sand, hardpack, switchbacks, climbs, descents, sideslopes, etc., etc. It's one of the trails that is part of the Kokopelli. If you are uncomfortable with your step-in (clipless) pedals this trail might not be for you.
The Mack exit is 11 miles east of the Utah/Colorado border on I-70. Parking is abundant just south of the I-70 exit. Head due west on the dirt road until you get to a sign. You should find the singletrack quite easily from there.
Summary: This trail sucks. Don't ride it. I mean, it's okay, but there are much better options in the area. The biggest problem is the hills: they're just too steep to be any fun, and the stuff in between just isn't worth it.
Recommended Route: Clockwise. If you climb the fire road from I-70, it's a ball-buster. If you want training and to get your HR up regardless of trail charm, go for it. The descent from Lion's Loop near the Mack Ridge intersection is fun enough, but why lose that much elevation that fast when you could make it longer with some whoops and cross more terrain? Eh.
CCW: Descending the fire road would be an insult after the climb to get there. Climbing the singletrack to get to Mack Ridge would be be too steep and technical to be any fun at all. Three guys we saw doing it were suffering like stuck pigs.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mary's Loop, Lion's Loop, Horsethief Bench, Mack Ridge (descend it!)
Summary: We rode this trail clockwise, and that seemed like the best direction. This trail has great views, and the position on the side of the hill is amazing. There are several short difficult sections, but most of the trail is moderate. The riding along the side of the hill might make some riders uncomfortable, but if you are not one of those riders this trail should not be missed.
Recommended Route: clockwise
Other recommended trails in the same area: Moore Fun, Horsethief's Bench

Summary: We did Rustler's, Horsethief, Mary's, Troy built, and a couple of others and got lost out on some private property. Two thumbs up from my wife and I. We both liked this one. Just enough technical stuff to make it interesting, but not to much to overwhelm you. Awesome views. Stayed at Highline camp site. Nice place.
Recommended Route: Do all the trails in this area in one day. Go for it.
Other recommended trails in the same area: the other side of the valley is pretty cool.

Summary: Great trail and really well thought out. A great way to finish the day. Not anything that stands out though, so I give it a 4.
Recommended Route: Counterclockwise was the way I did this. Seems okay. Either way and you will not be disappointed.

Summary: First time stopping in Fruita, usually just go to Moab. This was a mistake I will correct in the future. The trails are better than Moab (not much sand, no crowds on the trail, better camping options) and you don't just ride on the edge of I-70, which was always my concern. Did Chutes/Ladders as well and recommend riding the road through the Monument at moonlight (on a mtn. bike of course). Particularly impressed with the camping at Highline (better get reservations, it was full) and Monument (first come). Don't stay at the Colorado River Park in Fruita unless you want to look at McDonald signs and hear I-70 traffic. Many BLM options.
Recommended Route: Park at middle section between Mack and Loma exits. Up the jeep road you will see a sign of the area, follow trail downhill on Lions Loop and keep right, you will see another map-post on an uphill section, take this route. Follow to the end and onto Troy Built, from here there will be signposts. You will spit out onto the trailhead directly off the Mack exit, 2 options, take the jeep trail you will see on your right uphill for a few miles and ride the awesome Mack Ridge trail (recommended route) or take the dirt route back to your car.
