Rollins Pass (East Portal)

Old railroad bed turned jeep road. Pretty rocky near the top of the pass at 11,671, though I did see a Buick up there so you know it's ridable.

Summary:
Excellent scenic ride. Wilderness areas abound on the east side so know where you are. If the road is too easy ride up Jenny Creek for a lung buster. Dust, cars and dirt bikes are a weekend sure thing.

Recommended Route:
From the top take the stage road up from Yankee Doodle Lake on the right. Ride across the train tressels to the summit of the pass. Head down the west side of the pass to the Rifle Sight notch about 4 miles down, pick up the superfun singletrack on the left just below the old tressel. Cross the road where this trail reconnects more singletrack takes you to Broken Thumb trail follow Broken Thumb all the way down to the water board road go left back to Corona Pass road follow this road back to the summit of the pass. Big high altitude loop just be prepared.

Summary:
Park Near Moffat Tunnel, bike over Rollins Pass, have lunch in Winter Park, and spend the afternoon biking on Winter Park singletrack. The Rocky Mountain Inn and Hostel in Fraser is a great place to spend the night.
Come back the way you came! Last summer, a group of us tried the Roger's pass option. The ride up to Roger's pass was scenic and fun, but as soon as we started riding back down the East side of the Divide, we ran into a bunch of angry hikers who told us we couldn't bike on that trail. So we walked out, and sure enough, there was a "no biking" sign at the trailhead. Someone needs to put as sign up at the divide.

Recommended Route:
Moffat Tunnel Parking lot to Rollins Pass. Rollins Pass to Winter Park. Come back the next day.

Summary:
the downhill rogers pass to east portal run is unbelievable. deadly exposure, lakes, views and thats just the first mile! the next 8-9 are tough by and across the creek routes that will test your clipless mettle. try this loop of rollins pass if you are sick of the fire road or if you are like me and need pack trail down from the divide routes but dont want to get caught doing the runs north of here in indian peaks wilderness, which are illegal. email me next spring/summer if you want to do this loop. 2 cars can make this a shuttle run that you will tell your friends about for years. the full loop starting at moffat tunnel is for true xc hammerheads.

Recommended Route:
when you get to the top from rollins pass side, hike to the continental divide signage. head south and follow divide trail(left off road to winter park after 1/4 mile, then follow rock cairns). this is mostly hike a bike across alpine tundra for 3 miles. at this point, the divide trail heads south while rogers pass trail heads east back down the mountain to the east portal tunnel entrance (10 miles)

Summary:
A nice, long climb with very beautiful views from the pass. You'll be above treeline for quite awhile so weather may be of concern. The rocks may also hurt you on your way down, especially if you have meager suspension. Keep your eye out for gold nuggets.

Recommended Route:
There is the up and down approach and then there is the up and over approach. I've only tried the up and down myself.
