Summary:
Not a "destination ride", but a fun evening trail after work if you are close and want something different. The initial climb isn't too steep, kinda rocky, but doesn't require any special skills. Take the "eagle wind" trail to do the loop--fun, fairly level, fast loop. Take the left if you want to go the the lookout, although it doesn't really lookout at anything except the hogbacks to the north. The climb to the lookout is pretty steep and quite rocky, and as such presents a decent challenge for most of us.

Overall, not worth driving up from Denver for, but makes for part of a good circuit of afterwork trails in the Boulder area for those of us who work all day but still want to ride daily, too.

Recommended Route:
As described below...

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hall Ranch, Heil, others...

Summary:
Rode this trail this weekend with my wife. She's just developing her bike handling skills, and the rocky uphill to the Thompson Overlook was very challenging for her. I found it challenging too, but almost cleaned the Overlook trail.

The Eagle Ridge trail circling the mountain top was very easy for me, and my wife found it enjoyable and enough of a challenge that it was really fun for her. She eventually got a little too confident and wrecked, but said she'd love to come back later.

Oh, and some of you might remember that not everyone is 20 years old with nothing better to do than ride....

Recommended Route:
For the easiest ride, don't take the Overlook trail -- newbie riders will get frustrated. Instead, go up the Eagle Wind trail and circle the Rabbit Mountain peak a couple of times.

Summary:
While if you are in decent shape, you can blow through these trails pretty quickly, this is still a nice little place to test out some new gear, get in a quick ride if you are short on time or take some friends who might not be such demanding mountain bikers. Besides, depending upon what you are into, riding somewhere popular with the Ladies on occasion can't be all bad :) This also makes a decent out-n-back from your home, especially on your cyclo-cross bike if you want some road miles to boot. The ridge is fairly exposed, so there is not much shade, but it also means it stays light well into the evening. With so few legal mountain bike trails in Boulder County, it seems a real shame to not get some use out of this one on occasion.

Recommended Route:
Park at the lot at Highway 66 for a decent little road climb up to the Rabbit Mountain Parking lot on 55th. 55th is a dead end, so traffic is minimal.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hall Ranch

Summary:
This is an easy trail, not one for the roadie weenies that are keeping track of their mileage and heart rate exertion on an Excel spreadsheet. Ride it with your girlfriend and enjoy the views which are very nice(the views from the trail, not your girlfriend). I could see this being a fun quickie ride if you lived in Longmont or Lyons, but if you're a crazy gonzo rider, you're not going to like this too much.

Recommended Route:
Ride up from the highway

Hall Ranch is harder and longer

I agree with Superfly from FC. This trail is a joke and is only good for chicks just starting out and corporate fatasses with $3K full suspension bikes.
