Moore Fun

A pretty sick and twisted singletrack. East to west the trail is more uphill than down, with a tight, steep, rocky, fun, switchbacked downhill at the butt end. West to east, the trail starts out pretty tough, gaining a whole lotta altitude via a very tough climb. There are a lot of tough moves on the climb; some tight passages between rocks, ledges, switchbacks... very hard to keep your line in some places. Also very hard to keep from walking in some spots, but a real fun challenge, not recommended for novices. If you find your self walking rocky steeps, up or down, you might have moore pain on this trail... Once at the top, there is a great overlook, and then the trail winds its way down.... Not a very fast, open downhill, its rockier and much more (moore) technical than most other fruita trails. In some spots the trail can be hard to follow, especially down in the thicker vegitation while riding on rock, but hopefully people will erect more cairns to aid navigation. the 4.4 miles takes about an hour to an hour and a half for a good rider to do. Not including breaks at viewpoints. Give yourself enough time to do this trail, and be patient. Most importantly, stay on the trail and in control of your bike. This trail is very narrow in spots, lets keep it that way.
Summary: This is really just an append to all the other reviews.
I want to add that this trail HAS ZERO FLOW.
Switchback every 10 to 20 yards.
If you think your climb will be rewarded with some speed and or cooling breezes, think twice.
Other than that, if your expectation is moderately hard, technical climbing and decent, it's a great ride for late intermediate to advanced riders.
Recommended Route: East to West
Other recommended trails in the same area: No other trail in Fruita is like this.
So, no recommended in the area, but For easier, more flowy, "More Fun" trails, try Mary's (Easiest) and Horse Thief "Easier".

Summary: Either direction, this is a rocky, technical climb with a nice view over the southern mesas and river valley. We did this from West to East after the Mary's Loop/Horsethief Bench segment. The climb at the end of Mary's starts you up to the rocky sections of Moore Fun. Best to have a bashguard on for this, I didn't and a few sections I did not try in lieu of having to shell out for a new large chainring! Much of it is rideable though, and it just depends on your strength, skill and stamina. As it was a 95 or so degree day, the latter started flagging about half-way up! Ride as far as you can, if you get stopped, walk a bit, and after you get past the next section that you think would have stopped you, get back on and ride as far as you can again! When you get to the top, you have some beautiful views of the trails to the West (Lions, Todd's) and the river to the South. Take a break and then enjoy the downhill tech sections and drops. There will be a bit of climbing, but not too bad - just enough to keep you honest and sharp. Off the top of the next crest, the trail semi-disappears down through the scrub growing up through the rocks. There weren't many cairns or markers, but watch for sharp turns and tire marks in the dirt between the rocks and you can pick it up. The general rule seemed to be, if you can't see the trail in front of you, look past your shoulder a few degrees either way and there it will be! Once you are off this section (only a few hundred yards) the rest of the trail is easy to pick up. We had a couple of intermediate riders with us that made it, but did walk quite a bit of the descent. One gal has a nasty bruise on her hip from a dive, but she's a trooper and made a lot of it on the bike and lived to tell the tale.
Recommended Route: Either up the road from the parking area, to the end of Mary's Loop and then start up Moore Fun from the West. Best to do Mary's Loop first (with Horsethief to warm up!) and then Moore Fun. If it is hot, bring lots of water and some gels or bars to keep your energy up for the descent. Sturdy, knobby tires that are relatively rock-proof will help too. If you are in a group, regroup every little while to make sure nobody broke anything (bike or body) as this is a tough trail. No nasty exposure to speak of, but someone could still take a bad fall that may not let them ride out on their own. At the bottom, you hit the dirt road that goes up over the ridge (you rode this if you did Mary's Loop first) and climb 1/8 mile or so up and over to the cars. Have cold beerz in the cooler on a hot day and you'll be smiling so wide the top of your head may come off in the wind!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Horsethief Bench and Mary's Loop. Didn't ride Lions but friends in the area said it's worth coming back for.

Summary: This is a fantastic trail and I believe it showcases the true future of technical ATB trails. We have broken free of the hiking trail much like rock climbing broke away from piton pounding aid routes. I enjoy this trail when ridden from east to west because when done in this direction you stand the best chance of "cleaning it". If words or techniques like "trackstand","hop turn" or "ratchet pedal" are not in your vocabulary or skill set, you may want to try one of the less demanding technical trails in the area, because this trail is as serious as an ATB trail can get...... for now.
Recommended Route: East to West. take no prisoners, avoid no obsticals, Attack,Attack,Attack!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Insert fruita guide book here.

Summary: My girlfriend and I did this trail today. West to east from the end of Mary's. This trail is what mtb'ing is about. (for me) picking a line, checking your balance, using your skills. Granny gear climb from the get go. You have rock shelves 2'+ while climbing in 2nd lowest granny while balancing on the edge of a cliff.(almost) The first part is all zero momentum techo. If you dab or stop then you get to walk the next 20'. Some very tight switchbacks on the climb are also tough without a dab. (especially if you don't know the trail) Once at the top. Stop, sit on a rock, enjoy the view then get ready for the best run ever. It is DH from here. not super steep but techo. mucho funno. My girfriend probably walked 35% of the up and 10% of the down. If you love tricky then this trail will get you wet.
I have no idea why anyone would ever do this east to west. The real prize is coming down from the west. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
Recommended Route: west to east.
Other recommended trails in the same area: horsethief bench for the most fun and flow ever.

Summary: So we rode this section on our second day in Fruita. Day one was mellow, just Mary's to Horse and back. On day two, we went back to Loma and did Mary's to Steve's and then Moore Fun. The climb was alot of hike a bike, pedal for 10-20 yards, get off, hike for 10-20 yards, etc. I usually dont like to hike with a 30 pound weight, but when we finally got to the top, the downhill was incredible.... Rocky, tight and fast. Only have to get off a couple times and dumps you out at gravel road between parking lots. Hearing so many mixed reviews about this trail, I wasn't sure I would like it. It was a tough climb after Mary's and Steve's, but I'm glad we did it. Bring LOTS of water. No shade and this time of year hot.
Recommended Route: Mary to Steve's and finish with Moores....
Other recommended trails in the same area: Steve's Loop is incredible. Fast pedaling singletrack that wraps around the rim of some of the most amazing biking I have experienced. The route mentioned above is a great half day ride.
18 Road (3rd day) is worth checking out. We rode Joe's, went back up and rode Zip....
3 days of mountainbiking reality.
