Indian Fire Ridge

 5 of 5

I have ridden many of the epic trails in CO and this is definitely one of the best!! I mention this trail becayse I lived in durango for three years, and only rode this section twice. It is such a long ride it is rarely ridden, even by the locals. Get out and spend all day getting epicced!! From the hermosa creek trailhead, continue up the hermosa drainage on the road to Bolam Pass. About 1 mile after you park cross a creek, and begin climbing. Turn left after .4 mile (signed: Hotel Draw" road). Continue climbing on this road for 4 miles to somewhat of a highpoint. Turn left on the colorado trail(unmarked singletrack to the left) or continue on the road and hit the colorado trail at various junctions. You will be riding on the ridgeline for twenty miles or so, so as long as you don't begin to drop either to the dolores river canyon or to Hermosa creek you are in good shape. Follow Colorado Trail for twenty!! miles along beatiful ridge. Just make sure you do not drop off the ridge a considerable distance. After twenty miles you begin the indian fire ridge. Switchback up and down 12,000 ft peaks for five miles(one of the best views you will ever have!! do not ride this part(or any of the ride for that manner) if there is any chance of thunderstorms or rain in the region. This five mile section will take you at least one hour- trust me!! There is a little hike-a-bike involved. After this section you will continue descending east to the summit of Kennebec Pass. Follow other route descriptions for the thirty mile route on the Colorado Trail back to Durango. This ride should only be attemped by extremely fit riders, as you will spend ALL DAY riding fifty to sixty miles of alpine singletrack. Carry necessary survival gear and water(barely any water holes or creeks until junction creek)and be prepared for weather. I would only attemp on a nice sunny day. If you must you can bail at 1) Kennebec Pass-drop twenty miles down canyon to hw 160 and continue 10 miles east to durango or 2)junction creek road- a twenty mile descent down to durango. Get in shape, consult a map, and enjoy one of CO's best fifty-sixty mile epics. I can't stress it enough-BE PREPARED

Summary:
This trail is a section of the Colorado trail and the "Indian Trail Ridge" refers to the three small peaks you will be riding over. This is one of Durango's finest rides. If you start from Kennebec pass, jump on the trail and ride west; turn right at Taylor lake and hike straight up a hill which brings you to the ridge. Ride and hike up three small peaks, then descend to an elevation of 10,000 ft. Cruise over rolling terrain and turn right at Corral Draw. Enjoy a lengthy decent into Hermosa Creek. Next, ford the creek (be careful if the creek is ripping). Ride three easy miles up Hermosa Creek to the Hermosa Creek trail head.

You'll need good map I like the Durango Recreational Map by Latitude 40.

Recommended Route:
Start at Kenebec Pass and drop into Hermosa Creek via Corral Draw. Ride up Hermosa Creek to the trailhead.

or

Start at Hermosa Creek trailhead and ride up Hotel Draw. Hook up to the Colorado Trail and ride south until you hit Durango. (Long day)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Grindstone to Bear Creek
