Explosive lung busting start to the top of
the crest (for a Florida Rider), then
better trails as you head back into the area.
Ride the Rage in the Sage trail.
Summary: Just moved to Colorado Springs from Las Vegas, and stayed a day in Gunnison just to check the area out. Went to Tomichi Cycles and asked for a recommendation, and they gave me Hartman's Rocks, which I was a little disappointed with at first cuz it wasn't in Crested Butte. That lasted until I got to the trailhead. The terrain and soil reminded me a lot of Vegas area riding, but 35 degrees cooler in the summer. The locals thought it was a "hot" day at 83 degrees. Anyway, it was a good up-and-down through sagebrush country with a little of everything from fast rolling doubletrack to twisty singletrack to a little technical slickrock. Looking forward to exploring Crested Butte next. The rolling nature of this area doesn't wipe you out like the all-up-then-down of most mountain resorts. Aerobic 4 for those not acclimated, but probably a 2 for those used to the starting altitude (~7700 ft). Technical...Rattlesnake was fun, and probably the most technical that I rode...I'd give that a 3.5 -- don't take beginners on that one or anyone not comfortable with steep angles and some drops.
Recommended Route: I followed the bike shop's recommendation of climbing up the main road (#1) to a short switchbacked singletrack bypass of a steep section, left on a slightly uphill double-track along the west side of the Ring Dyke (large granite boulders) to Josho's (#17), which was a fun downhill ST with a few technical rock hops, back around to the road and left again to Skyline (#16), right on Skyline to Broken Shovel (#15), left on another dirt road to Rattlesnake, left on Rattlesnake, then I kind of rode a maze of fireroads back to the parking area. Bike shop guy said this was about 12 miles -- took me about 1h 45min to ride with stops for map checks. I actually missed the short singletrack at the beginning -- or rather, didn't go far enough, and ended up pushing the bike up Notch, and topped out just as two SMOKING HOT chicks cleaned the top of the other side and dropped down what I hiked up. I would have said something but I pretty much looked like a flippin IDIOT. Next time....

Summary: this is a great place to ride. Temichi cycles adds to the experiance so drop on in and get a map. This is one of the few trails I have ridden that I can't wait to ride again. The place rules. You can ride for hours and never feel like you went uphill. The trails are maintained and you can ride as fast as you want, catch air and hammer turns.
Recommended Route: get a trail map from temichi cycles on main street.
Other recommended trails in the same area: When it's raining in Crested Butte or Moab and Fruita are too hot this is the place to go

Summary: We rode Hartman Rocks for 3 days. Plan was for only 1 day. On the last day, we did the "rage in the sage" race loop. My wife and I both thought it was great. The guys in the bike shop will point you to other trails. The other "secret" trails are awesome and more technical. Everything is fun. This place totally kicks ass. I definitely liked Hartman Rocks better than Crested Butte. This place is mountain biking heaven. If I had a choice for a home site, this would be it. I would be a way better biker if I could ride this place every day. It has everything. The only bummer is that there are to many people on motorcycles. Packs of them. It would be better if they weren't around.....but I think if I lived here, I'd have a motorcycle and ride this place too....so it's hard for me to really complain.
Recommended Route: There is no way I could describe a route to you without writing for a really long time. Either just go and ride or stop at the bike shops in town. They have maps and will give you the scoops.

Summary: Originally planned on going to Fruita, but when to Gunnison instead. At first I wasn't to happy but after getting a look at the front side of the hill I started to get hyped. Only had about half a day for it. I started down at the base of the hill. Took the dirt road up to the ridge and just started ridding around the trails. Trial and error. Found 10 to be fun and technical. I think it was 13 that had a lot of loose shale and was fun at speed! Unless you really like busting a gut I recommend saving the vert and/or the notch until your ready to go or have someone drive you up like the DHs. riding up the short hill sucked wind..... Plenty of places to ride. Talk to the guys in the bike shops, very helpful. They also recommended going to Crested Butte.
Recommended Route: Recommend the Notch, Vert, trails 10, 11, 12, and 13.
