Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail is making a comeback this year! Last weekend this was the downhill portion of a singlespeed race. We shuttled it last night while demoing some bomber bikes: this is some of the funnest singletrack in town! Be warned...it is a pretty gnarly trail, but not due to lack of grooming - it's just a technical ride with lots of obstacles and super-tight switchbacks; it's loads of fun. It also offers the sweetest views of the La Platas and the Animas Valley there are to be had. Recommended Route: Shuttle it, I didn't catch the route as I was happily stuffed in the back of a windowless van. But any of the bike shops can tell you. Just ask how to get to the top of Missionary Ridge for the Haflin Downhill. It'll let you off on the east side of County Road 203 less than a mile south of Trimble Lane (or you can be an animal and ride up it starting here). Other recommended trails in the same area: Test Tracks/Durango Mountain Park, Colorado Trail, Telegraph system, Animas Mountain, Hermosa.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Racer Summary: So we gamely attempted this trail in July 2008. The climb was nice and aerobic, and mentally preps you for a sweet downhill run. Too bad this trail is almost too brutal to enjoy. The Missionary Ridge Trail, which leads to the top is not ride-able. There are too many downed trees due to the fire. You have to climb over fallen trees about every 100 yards. Once on Halflin Creek Trail, you can tell it is not used much any more. It is almost completely overgrown and it will shred your arms and legs. The scrub oak, thistles, and aspens all took turns carving tattoos into my exposed limbs. And without visibility, the technical bits on this trail are very scary. I advise caution, unless you have a suicide wish.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Haflin is open again. It is a bit rough from dead branches and new growth but all in all the trail is in great shape. It is a great downhill ride. It's super beautiful with the burned trees and the green growth. The climb from town gives you plenty of time to think about religion and all that. The downhill gives you plenty to pay attention to. Great little technical sections and switchbacks to test your skills. Recommended Route: Ride from town on Florida, turn up Sortais Rd. and head up towards the ridge and FR 071. 3 miles up there is a trailhead. Park there and ride up a few more miles to the radio towers. Go downhill. Other recommended trails in the same area: Hermosa Trail, Jones Creek
