Derby Mesa Loop

 0 of 5

A highly scenic loop ride that travels between the Colorado River, at the Town of Burns, and the Flat Top Wilderness Area. High desert temperatures make this an outstanding early or late season ride. Local rancher traffic only and plenty of wildlife (bighorn sheep, elk and bald eagles). Conveniently located as a day trip from Vail, Glenwood Springs or Steamboat Springs. A long, gradual climb brings you to a spectacular 8,000 canyon rim view and historic water flume. Short descent into Derby Creek Canyon, short climb back out, and long, exciting descent (make sure to stop and check out the view before the final descent) back to the Colorado River and the Town of Burns. Don't be misled by warm temps at the parking area -- bring a shell along for the chilly (spring/autumn)north-facing section of this ride. The difference in temps, although high desert, can be quite substantial. Trust me! Chinese food at Chelsea's (Oak Creek) or cocktails at the Wolcott Yacht Club are highly recommended afterwards.
