Rocks, switchbacks, rocks, ultra-technical, no climbing, single-down-track.
Summary: I am from Slovakia (Europe) and I visited Colorado Springs 7 years ago. I fell in love with the nature of Colorado Sprigs. There are many great trails we rode. My friend and I wanted to go for something big so we asked locals for the highest hill in that area. We learned that the Pikes Peak with its Barr trail is the greatest ride. We started pretty late. At 11 a.m. we jumped on our bikes in front of our hotel on The garden of the gods street in Colorado Springs. We rode to Manitou springs through The Garden of the gods park. Finally we hit the trail and started to climb up. It was steep, long, technical, hard but beautiful climb. We were lucky and we met only a few people on our way up. The hardest part was the final rocky climb as we lost the path due to snow. We just climbed up carrying our bikes over the rocks. We reached the summit after 6 hours at about 5 p.m. It was cold and very windy. We bought some food and souvenirs and after a 30 minute break we rode down the Pikes Peak Toll road back to Manitou Springs and then to The Garden of the gods. We got back in our hotel room just before 8 p.m. What a great bike trip.

Summary: mUTT & jEFF is an idiot (read his post below). Barr Trail and Pikes Peak are beautiful resources to those who live in (and travel to) Colorado Springs. Comments like his make us look like fools. I'll be on the peak this weekend with about 20 of my buddies. We'll fling one your way if we see you mUTT & jEFF. ;^)
Other recommended trails in the same area: The usuals ... Cheyenne Canyon, Waldo Canyon, Paul Intemann, Palmer Park ...

Summary: This is one of those trails that will stick with you long afterwards, as long as you take the road less traveled. RIDE UP. Like previous postings note, this is not a very technical trail in the area; but it is a grueling trail if you climb it. Like most others have said, start this ride early to avoid others!
Park down in Manitou so you get a warm up before you hit the trail. From the trailhead start to accend, being curteous of hikers and other riders. The first 1.5 is pretty steep, so don't get too discouraged; it will eventually become "less steep" as you go. The views are spectacular, plus the air is crisp and refreshing. Once you hit Barr camp (about 7 miles or so, you can climb more if you want) take a breather, then turn back around for some fun downhill. Great trail that will have you determined to try it again and again.
Recommended Route: Park in Manitou, ride up to Barr Camp, climb, take a few pictures, fly back down.

Summary: This is best ridden very, very early. In the summer months I rarely ride this trail as there are way too many hikers and runners about.
Best time to ride it is in winter (when there is little or no snow about) or at night!
Trail is steep and tight at first, flattens out a little ways above the junction off towards French creek/Trail 703 till you hit the A-Frame, then it's steep and gnarly.
Technically it's not nearly as hard as some of the local trails but for sheer toughness it's right up there. You hit the most technical sections of the trail above the treeline after riding about 10 miles.
The downhill part is just a lot of fun. Try to avoid skidding down the mountain (if you have to skid a lot get better before you ride the mountain again!) and be really courteous to hikers and runners.
This is why the night ride option is best. If you hit the peak at about dawn you get maybe as far as Barr Camp before you see another soul...fecking brilliant...ride fast and hard and not stop all the time (hikers have right of way).
My favourite part is the section from the A-Frame down to Barr Camp - utterly beautiful!
Recommended Route: C'mon don't be a wuss...ride to the top from the Barr Trail trailhead then ride back down again...
Other recommended trails in the same area: Somuch sweet riding in Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas...

Summary: Has this trail ever been cleaned from bottom to the top? You've got to have mutant super powers, especial the golden steps to summit (not to mention patience of a Saint to cope with tourists).
Recommended Route: I ride the first 2 miles in the morning for a workout once a week, and I do not recommend this during tourist season and before The Ascent training time. Even at 6am there's a hiker every 50 feet!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Everything in Cheyenne Canyon and beyond.
