Route 66

This is definetly more of a route than a trail. I guarantee it will lay the smacketh down on your ass though. PAY ATTENTION---- The ride starts at the roads end (for passenger cars) past the town of Montezuma heading up DEER CREEK. Its a 4wd road. (Don''t go left towards Webster Pass) Now on your bike Follow the jeep trail all the way up above treeline to where a sign points you to the Middle Fork of the Swan river. Bomb down the jeep trail and into the trees to where the Colorado Trail crosses the road. DONT MISS IT. Head right (north) on the Colorado Trail and ride it ALL THE WAY to Highway Nine. ( You have an option here, you can end your pain now and go get some rest and nurishment, coming back here in the morning to do this second section of the route. Or if you look down and see a red "S" on your chest - continue on with Ten Mile Range that you must cross looming thousands of feet above your puny little head) Now the pain begins. Staying on the Colorado Trail ride up and over the Ten Mile Range to Copper Mountain. It''s a Long climb (hike a bike) to the top but a sweet descent awaits you heading into Copper. From Copper Mtn. jump on the bike path and climb to Vail Pass. Head up the Shrine Pass road. Once the Shrine pass road starts descending, ride for a mile or so looking for a sign on the right pointing you to Bowmans Cut Off. Bowman''s is a single track trail that goes up near tree line again but takes you right to the best single track descent in this whole area-the Two Elks Pass trail into the town of Minturn. It''s best to stash a car in Minturn the night before because your going to be whupped. (at least I was) Park at the Rangers Station or over by the shooting range/ cemetary area and take your chances. If your looking for a epic ride that offers above treeline riding, great single track and some of the best views in Summit Counties / Eagle Counties, then here it is beeyaach. A full day of good weather is key to success--you don''t want to get beaned by lightning. So come get your kicks on route 66.....
