Summary:
This trail has the best of both worlds. First, it beats you down with a crazy climb up the steep, lower portion of the Barr Trail. Although you only climb for about 3 miles, you are more than ready for some down-hill before you get to the top. The Barr is in great condition, but full of switch-backs, roots, rocks, steps and hikers. As you leave the Barr at the intersection of the experimental forest road, the terrain changes from single track to double. The road is full of jeep barriers, so if the incline is not enough, the barriers will meet your needs. The double track is also in great shape, but it is essential to your health to maintain control on the way down. Eventually, you reach the turn and fall as the double track and barriers continue down the mountain. The trail ends at the highway followed by a paved bomb back to Manitou Springs.

Recommended Route:
If you prefer to end without any climbing, start in Manitou and climb to the Barr trailhead - otherwise drive to the trailhead up Ruxton to the Barr parking lot (near the Cog Railway depot.) Take the Barr up to the intersection with the Experimental Road. Follow it up - at the T-intersection, turn right, continue your climb. Eventually it falls and ends on highway 24. Turn right and drop back into Manitou (take the first exit you see.) There is supposed to be a link to the Ute Trail off the double-track (on the down-hill) which drops you into Manitou without the highway, but I missed it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Section 16 and Intemann trails
Chutes to Buckhorn to Captain Jacks and back
Jones downhill

Summary:
This is a killer climp up the steepest part of Barr trail. It took me a good two hours in granny gear the whole way. The run down through the experimental forest is way fun. You will fly down an old logging road with big jeep barriers (ie jumps if you are heading down the trail.) be careful, the trail down is fast and with the jumps you could easily lose it and launch off the side of the mountain. The trail exits on highway 24, which you take a short ride down, back into manitou and back to your car. Watch out for the witches up there and stay out of the old foundations. I've heard bad stories.

Recommended Route:
Head up barr Trail to the sign for the experimental forest. Take the experimental forest trail north west for a spell and then head down the old logging road.
