The Fort Collins Epic Ride

Average Rating:    (3.75 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 4

Ride up to Hughes Stadium and connect to Maxwell Trail. Climb up Maxwell to Shoreline Trail and head north along the Trail to Michaud Lane Trail. Don't take Michaud Trail all the way down, however. Turn left near the top and drop down to the road. Take the road around to Lory SP and head through the valley to The Wall (aka the Towers Service Road). Climb up the towers road to the towers and descend from the second set of towers along the semi-trail created by bikers to Westridge Trail. Take Westridge to Wathan to Spring Creek to Sodaberg to the Horsetooth Service Road and down to the parking lot. Take the main road around the south side of Horsetooth Res untill you go over the first dam (the south-most dam). Just past the dam, before a steep little road climb is a parking lot on the right with a trail leading down. Take this trail (pretty technical in places!) down to Pineridge. Ride from pineridge back to where you started along the singletrack! Now go home and reward yourself with a massive bong rip or congratulatory beer... You have completed the Ft. Collins Epic!

Summary:
This is a god training ride for people who are looking at doing longer rides. There can be alot of people on the trails, especially by Maxwell. The loop I like to do (see below) has alot of riding on the road, but the trails are very technical in small sections.

Recommended Route:
I do a longer version of the ride, which I have called the Fort Collins Tour de Parks. Start by going up Michaud, then riding the trails to and through Pine Ridge, ride to and through Coyote Ride, then to Devil's Backbone, then back to Horsetooth Mountain Park. Ride up the Service Road, and down Wathen. Take any of the trails to Lory State Park, and ride through Lory, and back over Michaud. This is about 60-70 miles and takes around 6 hours. There is water at Horsetooth and Devil's Backbone. It can be made as difficult as one likes by doing more trails in Horsetooth, but I have always found it difficult enough.

This is essentially all the trails in the area.

Summary:
This ride is filled with options. It offers something for everyone that is able to handle a longer ride. This is not a ride for someone that is not self-sufficient. There is a handful of all kinds of terrain. It's a great training ride.

Recommended Route:
I would suggest a few turns and additions to the description of this trail. When I go up the service road (the towers road), I like to ride on West Ridge to Wathen. Then take Wathen down to Spring Creek. Turn south on Spring Creek and head to the Horsetooth Service Road and take that to the bottom.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Here's a challenge that we did in the spring. Ride ever trail (bike legal) in Horsetooth and Lory State Park in their entirety in one outing. Don't leave anything out. There is a bit a repeat, but there is a way to do it with minimally repeating entire trails. It doesn't sound too hard, but by the time you go up the Service Road for the third time you are feeling it. Take a lot of food and water because you'll be out for awhile! Have fun!

Summary:
This is a great workout, takes me over three hours (and I'm not that fast, either). There's lots of bail out trails off of the Service road if you want to shorten it up. Nothing to technical just a long, fun ride. Bring a friend.

Recommended Route:
Ride to Michaud trailhead from home. Take Michaud up to Centennial Rd. at the Reservoir. Take a right off of the trail onto the road and follow the signage to Lory State Park. Enter the park and jump back on singletrack just past the ranger station on the left side of road near the horse stables. Follow this trail through the valley and to the service road. Climb the Service road up,up,up to the last trail on the left heading into Horsetooth park before the antennas (forgot the trail name). This trail will hook up with Wathan trail. Ride this to the Horsetooth Service road and then on out of the park to the road. Ride back to town. Extra credit: on the way back into town take centennial road to the left up the dam and over to maxwell trail which will take you down into town right at the end of Prospect Rd.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mill Creek in Lory State Park, Hall Ranch.

Fun ride. Long but fun ride. Usually takes me about 3 hours and I am not that fast. Best part about being in fort collins is that as I get older the girls stay the same age!!!!

Recommended Route:
Start from town go down to horsetooth road and continue untill you hit the mountain park. ride through the mountain park untill you come across the mill creek trail. take the singletrack down, get on the road back to town but when you get the resevoir hang a right and michauds will be on your left. make a short climb and hit the downhill and then cruise on it to town.
