Front Range 4 Park Connection

Average Rating:    (4.4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 5

From Lookout mtn: Take Chimney Gulch uphill to Beaver Brook trail, and then onto Lookout mtn trail. Follow this to the top of Apex park. Apex: Go down the main trail, make a left at the Sluice Box trail and head up to Pick N' Sledge, and ride this down to Apex trail. Continue out and head for hwy 40. Go north on hwy 40 for 1.3 miles. Pass Heritage Square and I-70 to the Mathews/Winters Trail head. Mathews/winters: Take the Red Rocks Trail to Dakota Ridge trail. Go up the Dakota Ridge Trail. When you get to the road, take it to the Green Mountain, Rooney Road trail head. Green Mtn: Make any type of loop to include at least one summit ride. End up at Rooney Road trail head, and head back up to the Dakota Ridge Trail that you haven't done yet. Take the Dakota Ridge Trail north to the trail head. Go back down to Apex park, up Apex trail (or any Apex Park trail combo) to Lookout Mtn trail. Follow the same path down that you came up. This is a connection of 4 Jefferson County Open Space parks. Windy Saddle (lookout mtn), Apex, Mathews/Winters, Green mountain, and then reverse. This is mostly single track, and the only real roads you have to deal with are aren't long and pretty easy.

Summary:
Actually, we did it even bigger than that this year. We started in Golden, rode over to White Ranch and hammered out a quick loop that included Belcher to Short Cut to Maverick and back down. From White Ranch, we rode over to Chimney Gulch and rode to the top and dropped down Apex. Then we rode over to Matthews Winters and zipped across it the easy way to Morrison. We then rode to Mt. Falcon and climbed to the top and descended via Lair o' the Bear. 38 miles and 6,800 feet of climbing. We called it Tour de Front Range.

Summary:
Up Windy Saddle, over to Apex (as descibed earlier) and then to Mathews/winters. Take the Red Rocks Trail to the end, ride through Red Rocks, and then over to Mt. Falcon... BE PREPARED! you'll hit a huge wall from Morrison to the top of Mt. Falcon. Reverse back.

Recommended Route:
I modified the original. Instead of Green Mountain, put Mt. Flacon in the loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I'm planning on starting from White-Ranch, and ending up in Deer Trail. Anyone interested, post here.

Summary:
I haven't managed to do the full loop yet. I usually ride up to Chimney Gulch from downtown Denver; down around and through Apex, Enchanted Forest (still a little sloppy), Sluice Box, whatever; up and over to Matthews-Winters; drag my sorry ass back home to Denver.

Recommended Route:
Same as above

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bus to Boulder; ride up Flag; do the Walker Ranch loop

Summary:
Be in shape for this one. The ride will include all types of terrain with Dakota Ridge bieng the most technically difficult. Just rode Mathews Winters/Green Mountain combo. Great ride but go early as it will be crowded with hikers/bikers. I have done the Lookout Mountain/Apex combo earlier and that is also a great ride, again it gets crowded. Doing them all would be awesome.

Recommended Route:
Same as suggested

Summary:
Great ride for a longer front range ride. I loved the variety but it was hot when I did it (wait until a cooler day or during spring / fall).

Recommended Route:
The same as suggested

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Since I've posted the 4 parks, I'm working on adding more parks to connect (White Ranch, Windy Saddle, Apex, Mathews/winters, mt falcon, Ken Caryl, Deer Creek)
