Boreas Pass (Summit County)
1 reviews
4 of 5
This is a 6 mile dirt road from the outskirts of Breckenridge (follow Boreas Pass Rd. at south end of town). When the paved road ends, there is a dirt pullout - mount your rig here. Ride up the road, which is an old rr bed. Watch for slow moving cars and other riders. The views of the Blue River Valley are spectacular throughout the ride, through aspens then pine forests. When you reach a watertower to the left, you are half way there. At about 5 miles, you reach treeline, and the views become even more spectacular. Wildflowers abound. When you near the pass, the air thins even more as you approach 12,000''. Perched on the pass is an old railroad camp and ranger station. Very cool to check out. You can continue over the south side of the pass down 6-8 miles to Como and South Park. Or head back to Breck and take the singletrack that meanders off to the east by the watertower....just follow the side road up into the woods, and then haul ass down the singletrack (rated intermediate) - great great ride! It meets back up with the dirt road down by the parking lot. Check out the free Summit County biking guide that can be found all over the place...that has alot of info. Rock on Summit!
Summary: The dirt road itself is just what it sounds like, a dirt road. The secret to making this a good ride is jumping on the Gold Dust trail, which runs parallel to Boreas Pass. This is a sweet, back-country piece of single track that has all the makings of a good mountain bike experience.
Recommended Route: Assuming you start in Breckenridge, start climbing Boreas Pass road. Once you're over the hump, look for the Gold Dust trailhead on your right. This trail will take you the town of Como, and from there you can take a connecting road back to Boreas Pass road. On your way back into Breck, take the Banker’s Tank trail down for some added fun.
