Switzerland Trail
8 reviews

The trail is a 4x4 road that affords some nice views of the divide and also occassionally out to the plains. It is a gradual climb (either way you go) for about five miles through rolling mountain meadows, coniferous forest, and is definately a good work out.

Trail Directions
Various places to access this trail. I suggest taking Boulder Canyon west to the turn for Fourmile Canyon and go right there. Follow Fourmile Canyon about 5 mi until the sign for Wall St and go left there. Follow the dirt road to the end at a little mining town called Sunset. From there you can take the Switzerland Trail N. toward Goldhill or S. toward Sugarloaf.

Summary:
as described above its an old scenic railroad bed.
bring your singlespeed, gear it a little higher than 2:1 and you'll get a pretty killer workout with great views of the plains.

Recommended Route:
down pennsylvania gulch, up north side, down todd gulch. don't go down the railroad bed...that's just boring, long and jarring. explore single track south of the trail head to pennsylvania gulch and it becomes a more interesting/technical ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
south sourdough, west mag, dogs

Summary:
Todd Gulch is some of the funnest, gnarliest, wildest singletrack squeezed into a fast mile or two. I would bring some pepper spray for bears or something for bear potential, but I really dont know. I just always get a weird feeling when Im ducking fallen logs halfway down the gulch by myself. You have to figure out where to hang the left. Hint: Gold Hill dirt road at top of hill.

Recommended Route:
todd gulch, pennsylvania gulch

Other recommended trails in the same area:
secret maze on the south side of sugarloaf/bald mountain.

Summary:
Here's the best way to ride Switzerland Trail... First of all, don't drive up Four Mile to Sunset, there is no parking there. Instead, drive up Canyon to Sugarloaf & park at the top of Switzerland Trial's south road. Now, ride west on the gradually climbing Glacier Lake Road past Bear Gulch Road (no sign) and Glacier Lake to Pennsylvania Gulch Road (great downhill) to the town of Sunset. Then, ride the Swiss Trail Road uphill north towards Gold Hill Road. Before you get to Gold Hill, look for a singletrack to your left. This trail rocks! It first goes through a nice grove of Aspen and then drops down steeply through Todd Gulch along side a small stream. -look out for a brabed wire fence/gate at the end of this singletrack that ends on the north side of Swiss Trail just above Sunset. Now, drop to Sunset and take the South side of Swiss Trail uphill to your car.

Recommended Route:
See the Summary... you can cut this shorter by taking Bear Gulch which is also a fun downhill.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blue Dot, Miller Rock

Summary:
THIS TRAIL BLOWS. Ok, had to get it out of my system, my apologies for those of you who like it. This is a very boring trail. If you ride a cyclocross bike or are a roadie 9 out of 10 times you ride, this might be a good trail. It is just a steep climb up a wide dirt path with loose rock mixed in. Small to medium rock. Very non-technical, unless you count steep climb as a technical ride. Good climb for a fully rigid singlespeed, a race hardtail with short travel fork up front, etc. I hit the trail after a long ride from Nederland, via Rainbow lakes, Sourdough and others, and was completely dissapointed. I heard so much good stuff about the trail and all it is, is a rocky dirt road.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Save yourself a drive and start off in Boulder, ride the creek path, right onto four mile, right onto Poorman road, right at the top of the climb, stay right, untill you hit Sunchine Canyon and bomb downhill back to Boulder, a nice ~40minute ride that's a good benchmark of your physical fitness level.

Summary:
Switzerland trail should only be used as a jumping off point for most riders other than beginners or people who just like to take it easy.

There are so many great singletracks off switzerland. You should bring a map and compass and a little curiousity. Beware though, you WILL get lost at some point. The old fire roads and pirate singletracks create quite a maze on the south side of glacier lake road, but there is some of the best sngletrack riding around to be had over there.

North of Sunset, there is a singletrack that drops from Gold Hill road down, but I'm not telling you where it is. You can find it yourself. But this is one excellent 1.5-2.5 mile singletrack downhill.

Good Luck

Recommended Route:
Get off the road.
