Bear Creek (Lair of the Bear)

 4 of 5

This is not an overly difficult trail.. It is an out and back with moderate climbs, nice smooth singletrack with a few relatively easy techy sections. The trail rolls up and down through three Jeffco park including Lair, Corwina and Pence Parks.. If you just want to get out quickly after work this a good trail. Nice views and some nice rolling uphills and downhills. A good beginner trail to take a date on.. Wouldnt go on weekends.. Not worth the crowds..

Summary:
I just rode this trail for the first time and it was a blast. Saw 15-20 deer throughout the ride. Less crowded than Matthew Winters or Apex. A good change from the loose rock, staight up, and straight down. Good cover for shade on really hot days. Great scenery. I can tell you that this ride was one of my favorite in all of Colorado, next to Betasso Preserve outside of Boulder!

Recommended Route:
I rode Bear Creek trail out and back.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Matthew Winters is O.K. (can be crowded)/Red Rocks route, Betasso, Apex (can also be crowded).

Summary:
It was great workout with good scenery and nice mix of sun and shade. The climb got the heart going, but the downhill was rather uneventful if you like hitting some jumps.

Recommended Route:
Follow the creek and head up.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Three Sisters - You can get more creative with the terrain.

Summary:
Great trail, the ride from the Lair O' the bear to Pence is s good climb, only a couple of tech spots, but doable by most. The climb is a good workout, the return trip down is a blast. add the lair of the beat loop to the pence park, and you can almost get 14 miles in.

Recommended Route:
Lair O' the bear parking lot, up the creek to the pence park trail, up to the road crossing, back dowm toward the parking lot, cross the creak and the lair of the bear loop back to the car.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Morrison climb/Mt. Falcon, 3 Sisters/Evergreen mtn, Elk Meadow/Bergen Peak

Summary:
Want an early season ride or not looking for your typical front range gut buster? Warm up with 5 minutes of flat along the creek and check out the castle somebody built (really, it is a castle). Then head upwards with enough incline to get the blood flowing, some flats here and there to catch your breathe, more gradual up with one semi challenging technical rock climb and lastly you end up at the highway.

Recommended Route:
Skip riding to Mt Falcon. The best option is to start at the LoB lot ride to the top, turn back and enjoy the ride down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bergen Peak (Elk Meadow), White Ranch, Apex

Summary:
This is a fun trail, great to do as a connection with Mount Falcon. The ride up isn't that hard, even for a pansy girl. I took a date on this trail, and HE didn't complain much. But I didn't get any either. Hmmmmm.

Recommended Route:
Park in Morrison, ride up Mt. Falcon, then ride up the main road (there are a few turns) and get on the trail (don't slow down!) across the road from Pence Park. Do Lair o the Bear from the top, all the way down Bear Creek trail, then ride the highway down back into Morrison and drink margaritas at the Morrison Inn. You still have a little bit of climbing doing it this way (and of course, you just climbed Falcon).
