Woods Canyon Lake

First off let me just say that the scenery in the woods canyon lake area is unbelievable. The lake itself is in a fairly remote location so other than a few people fishing you will not see much to much traffic. This trail basically takes you around the perimeter of the lake over terrain of varying degrees of difficulty ranging from flat to hike-a-bike.

I recomend stoping at Hike, Bike & Run (http://www.hikebikeandrun.com/)in Payson before heading out. Mick the owner has an excellent knowlege of this trail system and may be able to give you updates on trail conditions etc..

Directions: From Payson take highway 260 East towards Heber. After driving for pproximately 35 miles you will see a sign for woods canyon lake at which point you will turn left and head into woods canyon lake recreation area. A couple of miles into the recreation area the roadway surface will change from asphalt to gravel. A few hundered feet before reaching this point you will see a small parking area on your left. I recomend parking here and spending a few minutes taking in the view. After that head across the road to the meadow view trail (paved) and follow it down to the lake. There is no actual marker for the trail head but it is fairly obvious where the trail is and once you are on it the trail is marked with blue diamonds nailed to the trees every 1000' or so.

Summary:
I rode this trail early morning after a lot of rain the night before. This trail is awesome and I plan on going back once a month. Saw only one other mt biker and a handful of hikers. The trail has lots of opportunity to soak in the view and enjoy being away from the city. Other than that there is technical areas that require you to hike your bike, cross a few streams and get muddy. Tree roots and logs everywhere make it a challenge to gain much speed but its overall fun and beautiful.
I used strava to GPS my location.

Recommended Route:
My weekly trail is at south mountain. Start at beverly trail from 24th street and baseline up to Mormon trail and downhill through javalina.
