Summary:
First time riding in flag. Came up from phoenix to beat the heat. The elevation and the climb up elden lookout road about killed me. The singletrack on the way down was WELL worth the climb to the top. I Plan on making it up here at least once a month to ride this loop. The good news is that the climb will get easier. Top notch all the way around. Step out of your comfort level for a day, and RIDE THIS TRAIL. This is what that bike was made for!

Recommended Route:
Elden lookout Rd. Sunset to Schultz.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
anything in flag and sedona. Phoenix is ok, just training for the real riding up here!

Summary:
Just like everyone has said before. Sweet downhill mixed with a challenging climb in the middle ending with sweet downhill. I, being born and raised on Flagstaff and living here my whole life, had trouble with the long uphill towards schultz creek. I am in decent shape and made it less than a quarter way up before i was winded. But this part is worth it, trust us!

Recommended Route:
Fire road to sunset to schultz to parking lot for the easy. If you want anything else, take it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Any. It's Flagstaff.

Summary:
Don't let the "downhiller" mislead you, I do plenty of XC rides as well(like this one), I just happen to have a DH bike and I use it a lot.

That said, the guy below is way off. This is a good trail for a good rider. I am not in perfect physical condition, I ride a 34lb XC bike, came from a lower elevation(Prescott), and I didn't bonk on the gradual 7 mile climb to the top.

This trail is great though, nice tacky bermy-turns, some rocks to keep it interesting, just real fun. This(and the 3 other trails that are required to get back down to the parking area, you just dont ride back down this one) is a great payoff for the climb. Something like an hour of climbing for much more than an hour of windind back down to the parking area. There's some areas where you can do a little drop, some places where you can do a little jump, a few climbs, it's a GREAT XC ride.

Recommended Route:
Went up Eldnen Lookout, then onto the "catwalk", then hit sunset, oldham, little gnarly, and schultz creek. This could be done nearly all on trails though, but it'd be a real tough climb(THEN I might bonk).

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Don't ride in Flagstaff much...yet.

Summary:
I didn't like this ride. I regularly bike 1-2/week in Phoenix; for fun, not fitness. The six mile climb to start sucked. I had to take too many breaks and nearly bonked before the fun could start. If you take this ride, a shuttle up the hill will make a big difference. The downhill portion of this ride is great; but has some problems. On Sunset, there are some areas where 95% of bikers will have to hike (up and down). The rest of the downhill is smooth and fun, and seemingly neverending. From reading the other reviews, it sounds like the downhill is bliss; but it gets hard to enjoy when you're dog tired. There aren't very many areas where you can coast w/o braking becuase the hill is so steep. My v-brakes were very mushy just halfway into the descent because you have to constantly brake the whole way down. Your hands will get very tired on the downhill. Disc breaks will help. I'm giving this ride 2 stars. Riding 6 miles up, then riding straight back down is not my idea of a good ride. I like to mix the up and down in a ride. Maybe I'd think differently about this ride if (1) I got shuttled up to Sunset; or (2) I was in MUCH better shape.

Recommended Route:
I rode up the Elden fire road to Sunset trailhead; then took Sunset to Little Bear; turned around andwent back up Sunset to Schultz and down to the car.

Summary:
I found this by chance last fall but winter came before I could try it out. This spring, though, I have done little else than ride this up. Lots of rocks, two sections of sustained steep climb, and several places that, yes, I still gotta hike. &*%$#@. Wish the forests/mountain/Sedona wasn't closed now - I wouldn't be here writing this. . . .

Recommended Route:
Go from Elden Look Out road, the dirt road, guess the trail starts about a mile up, off to the left. I generally ride up to the dry tank in the meadow and back down the rocky section towards Shultz Creek trail then turn around and do it in reverse. Sunset is good down hill, but the challenge is getting up it. Lots of other stuff in the vacinity.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sedona - Little Horse to Chicken Point on to Broken Arrow then back to Little Horse. Why start at LH? There's a public toilet.
