Smith Ravine Trail

Head up Tr.#297(Smith Ravine Tr.)Gradual 3 mi. climb to FR52a.(can go left on road to top of Spruce Mtn. for awesome veiws) Turn around, fast and fun singletrack downhill. Well worth the semi-difficult climb. Some technical sections(rocks, roots, switchbacks, ect.)Some super smooth and fast sections too. One of my favorite all time rides. Super fun and lots of shade for those hot summer days. Can also be linked to another trail behind where you parked with the same kind of terain. Super fun also, lets out on Walker Rd. Go left on Walker back to your car. This place is a blast, some locals will probably hate me for giving out this awesome secret spot.

Summary:
Signed as trail 297, the trail begins at a small pullout on the right side of the Walker road near Prescott, conveniently right across the street from the end of the outstanding 305 trail. It gains 800+ feet from base to summit, but the varied up and down adds quite a bit more. A good mix of fast dirt, tight corners, roots, and patches of rocks. Aerobic and strenuous, but varied. 3 miles one way.

Recommended Route:
Great as part of a loop of 305, linked with 299 and 62. A trip to the top of Spruce mountain, and either 307 or even 377 are also excellent for a longer outing.

Other recommended trails in the same area:

Summary:
Climb to a 700ft. gain, very smooth, not lots of loose rock here. Great views off to the right about 3/4 of the way up. I would describe the downhill as fast, smooth and non-technical. The downhill is smoother than the Groom Creek loop and not nearly as technical. Long draining climb but rewarded with windy, smooth downhill. Look out for other riders - popular trail!

Recommended Route:
Off Walker road on R side, across the street from end of 305 Trail Head.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Trail 305 before will have you burned for the Climb up 297 Smith Ravine. On other side Trail 307 Groom Creek loop.

Summary:
Very fun trail. Not the best choice for all out DH (go down 299 to 7 mile gulch if you have your gravity bike). This trail is a blast though, there were like 3 significant climbs if I remember correctly, but other than that it's a LOT of high speed downhill smooth singletrack. It is like trail 305, but way steeper and just a blast to come down. This trail is not ridden very often, and not many people ride all the way up trail 62, 299 and spruce mountain road to get here, but it is definitely worth it, this is most definitely one of the best trails in the prescott area. Not as technical as Yankee Doodle (off mt union), but much easier to access and is the best part of making the big "loop".

Im rating this trail a 4, it's a blast, and while there isn't much cimbing, there are some steep switchbacks and steep short climbs that really get you when you have climbed all the way from the costco area up the ridge. Not overly tecnical too, but you can easily get your speed out of hand and miss a turn.

Recommended Route:
Up 62 to 299 to Spruce Mtn Road and to 297, then back on 305.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
305
7 mile gulch
62
299
and the frontside Spruce Mtn trails.

Summary:
this is my favorite single track in the prescott area. It is steep and rocky to start with but then it gets fun and fast. The furtile dirt gives tons of traction even with high tire psi. Last time I was up there I was cutting one of the turns at about 15 mph. when I looked up and right in the middle of the trail was the biggest wild turkey I'd ever seen. Dumb thing just stood there and watched me lock up my brakes and slide off the trail. It was hillarious to my friend who was behind me.
It took the lead from the spruce mountain trail 307 when the forest service screwed it up with new water dams. Also dirt bikes and quads, even some trucks have gotten up there so now smith ravine is the best.

Recommended Route:
take the lynx lake road out to the trail head which is on the right a clearly marked park and do the trail up and back. Butif your as lazy as i am you can go out the senator highway to the spruce mountain road and drive to the trail head park and ride down. It is on the left after the old red fire truck. keep your eyes opened it's numbered but I don't remeber the number right now.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The 307 is worth a go but if i were up there i would take smith ravine, they are both on spruce mountain in the same area.
