Drive up the Swift Trail Road (366) off 191 that heads to Safford. You head up the mountain through lots of switchbacks. It will seem never ending but the scenery just keeps getting better. Past MP 136 the pavement ends, but you drive about 1.5 miles further to Hospital Flat Campground, I like the tent only area south of the road. Park here. There are bathrooms but no water. Ride your bike up the road, and the Grant Hill Loop is at MP 138. Look left. To the right is the Cunningham Loop--which I haven't done yet.

The trail is intermediate but the elevation will get you--it starts at 9,100 feet. Nothing very steep but there first part goes down, only to have to recover all that elevation loss. The west side of the outer loop is relatively flat and includes single track. There are 3 bail out trails to get you back to the parking area faster, but the whole outside loop is only 6 miles. Nothing technical on the whole ride. The switchbacks on the final 2 miles might challenge you. Beautiful views. Don't miss the short side trail after the first mile to a cliff where you can see all the way south and west.

Trail is nice especially for a Tucson summer. I camped at Hospital Flat and the morning temp as a nice 60. Even in the mid-day, the temps are nice. Lots of shade on this ride, but no water. Never saw another person on the trail. Some sections are not so steep but the elevation caused me to stop or walk a few.

Recommended Route:
Take the Outside Loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Cunningham Loop
