Goldwater Lakes Trail 396

Average Rating:    (4.25 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 4

Start at White Spar Campground parking area about 4 mile from the courthouse square. Trail starts 100 feet up the gated road on the left. Twisty smooth single track with great vistas of the lakes and nearby peaks. Great out and back. Join with 372, 373 and 374 for some good times.

Summary:
This is a favorite trail of mine to ride. I love the smooth, twisty trails. The beginning has some moderate climbing. To make it harder just ride faster! Don't forget to look for Goldwater Lake on the left on the way up! You can take a detour and check out the lake now and then go back and resume your ride. This trail can get a little muddy in areas depending on precipitation in the area. There are some small stream crossings too when there is snow/rain. Once you get to the top I recommend the pipeline trail on the way back (read first review for directions). Overall this is a very fun trail!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I highly recommend you go across the street from White Spar parking area and ride trail 9415. Combine 9415 with 396 and you will definitely have technical trails, fun descents and a killer workout!

Summary:
Nice single track! Nothing really technical, but nice riding. It's fairly smooth, and I saw many on hard-tails. A few steady climbs but never anything really steep.

Recommended Route:
I was camping at White Spar Campground, so started there. 396 is an out n back from the trailhead and parking lot on White Spar Road (or from Senator Hwy. But there are other trails that can be combined to make a loop.
Ride east on 396, past Goldwater Lake there is an unmarked trail that is called Pipeline (it follows an old pipeline), that ties into an old 2-track for a bit, then left on to 373, and back to the camp on 372. Nice 7ish mile loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
On the other side of White Spar road there is a new trail. It's not done yet, but will make up a part of the Prescott Circle trail. In any case it's a nice 3 miles out-3 back. Can add miles and climb to your 396 fun.

Summary:
Flowy smooth trail with few steep climbs or descents. Very few rocks or obstacles. Nice every once and a while, but it's one type of riding and I get bored doing one type of riding exclusively. The trail also doesn't make any good conections yet for bigger rides, when 299 gets re-routed this may be different.

Recommended Route:
396 out and back is fun. Taking the Feldmire bypass is fun. Messing around on some of the closer trails can increase the milege a little bit as well.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Feldmire, 299, Boy Scout/126, 307...

Summary:
I'm biased when I talk about this trail because I designed it. A favorite of locals its starts out climbing from the start. Grades aren't too steep and there are always flat spots or downhill when the tank runs low. After reaching the viewpoint, you descend a steeper hill on a short section of old road until you get to the pond. Year round water in Prescott! Climb again for awhile with Lower Goldwater Lake on your left until you reach the 'saddle'. Good spot to wait for the slower riders in your group. Descend to Banning Creek on the fun twisties then climb again to Senator highway.

Recommended Route:
Ride out and back (yes, everyone like a loop, but this trail is soooo fun both ways). On the way back after the pond and climbing over the viewpoint, turn right on trail 374 - Hidden Valley Trail- and drop down to the 373 - Apple Blossom Trail. Take a left here and wander to the 372 - Twist and Shout Trail. Go left again and twist and shout back to the 396 Goldwater Lakes Trail. A right will take you the short distance back to the trailhead. Yehaaaaa!
