Geronimo

This is a highly technical, steep downhill run that should not be attempted by beginners. There is roughly 1000-1200 foot elevation change in 1-1.5 miles so you can imagine the grade. It is very infrequently used and therefore has its loose areas as well as some overgrowth. The best part of the trail is the lower 1/2 where there are several rock chutes that are a blast to descend. The entire trail with the exception of one or two spots is ridable for a moderately experienced rider. You come out on the north side of south mountain at the top of 20th street at the Boy Scouts camp. Head north on 20th street to the hiline canal. Go east along the hiline for ~2.5 miles back to the Beverly Canyon Parking lot. From there you can take the east loop trails back to the 48th street/Guadalupe parking lot.

Trail Directions
Geronimo is a downhill trail only that starts at the Buena Vista parking lot in South Mountain park. Best access is riding up National/Mormon from the east end of the park. Once you hit the Buena Vista parking lot, head north on the unmarked trail that takes off between the rock walls. After about 1/4 mile, a trail will head off to the right; it's marked with a plain brown stake with no name - that's Geronimo. Bombs Away and hang on.

Summary:
Rode yesterday for the first time. Would describe myself as all mountain rather than DH, but managed this OK with a couple of dabs on the tighter hairpins. I don't think that any individual section is as technical as some of the sections on National Trail, but it is much longer and steeper, so you are (potentially) more tired and hitting the gnarly stuff at much higher speeds -- great fun, if you like that kind of thing :-). For the real DH guys, you can make it as exciting as you like by using your brakes (much) less than I did! By the time I got to the bottom, both arms and legs were pumped. Trail was in excellent condition, and very quiet (I didn't meet a single hiker) -- so you can really let it rip if you have what it takes.

Recommended Route:
Pretty obvious. Start from the bench at Buena Vista view point. Bear a little to the right after a few hundred metres (I think that the LH trail just leads up to another view point), and let rip!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
One of my all-time favourite rides is from the 42nd street trailhead, up Javelina, Mormon and National to Buena vista, and then back down National and Javelina to return to the trailhead (only about 11 miles, but a tough 11 miles).

Summary:
One of the fastest, funnest trails on S. Mtn. Mostly all down with only a couple ascents of 10-20 strokes. Been riding this regularly for eight years. Rode it this a.m. on the way to work. Recent heavy rains have seriously damaged some of the upper dirt sections. And brush and cactus have grown very close to the trail. Needs maintenance attention. Shuttlers have improved some of the lower turns with berms. Recommended for all-mtn & DH bikes not XC bikes.

Recommended Route:
From Buena Vista parking lot at the east end of the paved road up S. Mtn. go north towards the park bench and start down. Veer right 200 yard down and let it loose.

Summary:
Hit Holbert then Geromino (Shuttled) New to the area these rides are sick. They work you from the top all the way down. I've never ridden stuff like it, but could describe it as gnarly rock garden all the way down, throw in some tight switchbacks, a little exposure, and good speed and your set. Makes me want to roll it on a DH machine, I hit it on my 6" Enduro Pro and got to push the bike to it's DH limits. Rock the armour and the FF helmet, and get some bruises. Love it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Holbert, Javelina to Mormon to National and down.

Summary:
This trail is one of the best I have ridden. It is very fast and very technical. It is also drops down through a beautifull canyon and is not crowded like some of the other trails on South Mountain. It is extremely fun from top to bottom. Lots of drops, shoots, switchbacks, and fast sections. I recommend it only to advanced riders. I only ride this trail when I am feeling confident. Would definitely not recommend riding this alone.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mormon, National, Upper part of National (above the parking lot)

Summary:
Fun! I did this recently looking for something new at south mountain. It was fun fast and entirely rideable on my S-Works Epic. I don't wear pads or a face protecting helmet. Though, if you took a nasty spill here you might be wishing some protection!. The only bits which where hard to stay on the saddle were a couple hairpin turns. It was a bit sandy in spots but all and all it was fun!

Recommended Route:
from 48th st ramada's climb up national or mormon to buena vista descend geronimo

Other recommended trails in the same area:
beverly, national, telegraph, javalina, ridgeline
