Arizona Trail Pistol Hill Rd to Three Bridges

Average Rating:    (4.57 of 5)

This is a segment of the Arizona trail. This acces pint is the closest to tucson, about 20 miles from the center of town. All I can say about this trail is it is sweet buffed singletrack, which is quite rare close to tucson. About three miles south of the trailhead there is a moderate climb. This trail is fairly new, and you can tell it was designed with bikes in mind. There are dozens of places where the trail is reinforced with rock berms and even plastic culverts to minimize erosion from water. Overall you can maintain a fast pace due to the relative smoothness of the trail. THe scenery is very nice, with great views of the mountains in colossal cave park, desert wildlife, and some sweet rock formations. Another thing I noticed is the soil color changed at last three or four times as you move through the desert, from blonde sand to orange dirt, and even some brown. az trail-pistol hill to three bridges

Summary:
Beginner? Maybe on horseback! Rode from the Pistol Hill Road parking area to Three Bridges and back. Impressively beautiful ride, but quite exhausting. Totally worth it though! First couple miles from the parking area are smooth, fast and fun. Terrain changes are fascinating. View from the top of "the climb" is spectacular. Some good chunky technical stuff up and down, non-hardcore riders such as myself will be doing some hike-a-bike.

I will ride this again, once I have forgotten/blocked out the pain!

Recommended Route:
Start in Pistol Hill Road parking area (left turn off of Old Spanish Trail) across the cattle guard by the sign. Bike back over the Cattle Guard and head left. Five or so miles in (at the top of the big climb) rest a moment, and keep going another three-ish miles to Three Bridges (over Cienega Creek). It is totally worth it. Backtrack to the parking area and feel very accomplished. Bring ample water and snacks.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Fantasy Island, Tucson Mountain Park.

Great flow, with a few technical spots. I am not much for out and back rides, but this one is great. The whole thing is single track

Summary:
Fun out and back trail. It's up, down, twisty, and flowing. At first the trail is very buff and fast with sweeping turns around cactus. A little further down the trail the surface is more rocky and a bit more up and down. The three bridges area is kind of odd with railroads crossing at 90 degrees and an auto bridge too. Overall it's like two completely different trails stuck end to end. I'd rate it an intermediate skill level trail. Do not take a girlfriend here for her first taste of mountain biking. I'm glad I rode this trail first before I made that mistake!

Summary:
Beginner? Only if you want to scare off potential riding buddies. Only beginner in terms of technicality...but even so there are some spots to keep an intermediate rider happy. But this trail is NOT a beginner trail in terms of distance and endurance, especially in hot weather. It is long and has a few grueling climbs. Definitely a trail worth getting to know. :D
