Arizona trail pistol hill rd to three bridges
3 reviews
 4.33 of 5

This is a segment of the Arizona trail. This acces pint is the closest to tucson, about 20 miles from the center of town. All I can say about this trail is it is sweet buffed singletrack, which is quite rare close to tucson. About three miles south of the trailhead there is a moderate climb. This trail is fairly new, and you can tell it was designed with bikes in mind. There are dozens of places where the trail is reinforced with rock berms and even plastic culverts to minimize erosion from water. Overall you can maintain a fast pace due to the relative smoothness of the trail. THe scenery is very nice, with great views of the mountains in colossal cave park, desert wildlife, and some sweet rock formations. Another thing I noticed is the soil color changed at last three or four times as you move through the desert, from blonde sand to orange dirt, and even some brown. az trail-pistol hill to three bridges

Summary:
Beginner? Only if you want to scare off potential riding buddies. Only beginner in terms of technicality...but even so there are some spots to keep an intermediate rider happy. But this trail is NOT a beginner trail in terms of distance and endurance, especially in hot weather. It is long and has a few grueling climbs. Definitely a trail worth getting to know. :D

Fantasy Island, 50 Year, Sweetwater Preserve.

Summary:
A nice fellow I met at Starr Gap on last spring's Tucson trip was kind enough to turn me on to this new piece of trail. I did enjoy it although generally not too crazy about out and backs. Just good solid xc riding, well built. But silly me, I still go to Tucson for Fantasy Island and The Chutes and this bit did not make my cut for four days of riding last fall.

Summary:
Access the trail head by taking Old spanish trail to pistol hill rd, about 15 miles from town Hen head left on pistol hill rd (dirt) for 1.5 miles. Cross the cattleguard and park. the trailhead is 20 yards south of the cattleguard on the left. It is marked about ten yards in with a brown az trail post. The trail is well marked with these posts and you cant get lost.
