Lost Dutchman State Park

3 of 5
Named after the fabled lost gold mine, this park is located in the Sonoran Desert at an elevation of 2000 feet. The park offers a variety of hiking trails, nature trails, 70 regular campsites, picnic facilities, and special programs throughout the year.
Summary: The trail is called "Jacob's Crosscut" It runs from Broadway road (very far east end of Broadway) all of the way into the Lost Dutchman State Park, right across the road from the Goldfield mining camp (he little tourist trap ghost town on Apache Trail). Nice thing is that there is no park fee at this entry point (it's a forest trail).
The trail starts out with an extremely rocky climb up into the foothills of the Superstition Mountains. The first 2 miles are a real challenge since there are endless rocks that are jagged and loose, and the trail is lined with flesh impaling cactus. There are two intersections on the climb up, we stayed left for both and plan to explore them later. Once the climb is over, the trail gets a little less rocky, The rocks occur in clumps and piles at about 50 to 100ft intervals and can be challenging to clear at times. As you approach the park, the trail becomes much nicer, and not nearly as fun. Basically get to the park, do a short loop around it, then jump back on the same trail and head back the way you came.
