F.I.N.S. North

F.I.N.S.,(Fantasy Island North Singletrack)is located in Estrella Mt. Ranch. To get there you go south from I-10 on Estrella Parkway 10.18 miles, turn R on Weststar for 1/2 mile, park at School and ride to trailhead 1/2 mi +. L turn at left turn lane is start of trailhead. This is a hiking, biking only trail. It took 2 yrs to build it is well marked with trail signs that have the names of the trail or hub. Some of the signs will include the pucker factors 1 to 4, 4 being the highest. It should be a fun & challenging trail for Intermediate and up. Beginers need some single track experience before riding this trail. There is pucker 3&4s on almost every trail. This trail will bite you if you don't pay attention. We are going to build a section for the beginner bikers soon, puckers 1 -3). If you do all of the trails you will climb 900 ft or more in the 7 miles. Grunt, Kylie's Crossing, Wayne's World, Bone Yard, Harv's Howl, Bear Claw and Hurts Donut will tax your skills while Murel's mile, Joey's Jaunt,Spent spade, Rusty rake, Kims klimb, Randy's ridge and Base Butte will be just plane fun. We are building two more trails Jim's Assent just for the ardent climbers. It will take you to the top of the highest point of the mountain and will have a 4 pucker rating for exposer. I have been riding this trail for over a year and don't get tired of it. It is our wish for you to enjoy the trails but please stay under control, sliding tires makes more work.

Summary:
I am new to PHX area. I discovered FINS recently. Yesterday (Oct 11) was my second ride. I have to say this trial is awesome. Fits me perfectly as I am between beginner and average rider. Once thing is I am highly concerned about - Mountain lions. Has anyone spotted a mountain lion? or think that there might be one. I have read that people have actually spotted mountain lions in Estrella Mountain park. Fins is smaller and at most part, surrounded by houses. I noticed someone spotted one in 2007. May be back then there were not houses. I ride alone all the times.

Summary:
Directions are correct, I'm from Los Angeles. Friendly local riders, met 4 on a Thursday at 7:30AM. From trail head, take fireroad to beginning of singletrack, where the trail map is located. There are two 1ft high ramps you can launch off before reaching the singletrack. I rode counter clockwise around FINS then up thru "Grunt". Coming from SoCal, I don't ride AZ loose over hardpack/rocky terrain, but it was really fun. Just make sure you pick the right line. My friend had difficulty. The climbs are short, one can stay on the middle ring for all climbs. The Grunt has wide switchbacks & a small wood bridge. Descent, one can pickup some speed by pumping the bike thru the terrain.

Recommended Route:
For novice riders, stay on trail that goes around the mountain's base, it's much less technical. Intermediate & up, ride thru the Grunt up & down. Great trail for visitors not used the AZ heat. I was fortunate, it was overcast & only 82*F at 7:30am. Drink lots of fluids.

Summary:
Great ride today on FINS. Really a great trail system. Took Muriels mile through the boneyard, up Jim's (brutal but short climb), Grunt, and back around to the start. Wonderfully maintained and outstanding signage. Not really difficult except some sandy downhill turns on the Grunt. Perfect for my skill level. I can not imagine anyone who would not love this track. Wonderful veiws too!!

Summary:
Good group ride trail system. Excellent work putting all of this together. Not the most challenging trails in Arizona, but definately fun for the West Valley (especially since you can save $6 - beer money). Good single track, need to keep eyes on the trail, but nothing really scary here. Just fun constant riding.

Recommended Route:
Not completely familiar as of yet, but remember upper Grunt and lower Grunt as pretty good. Merle's trail pretty fun.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I got back into MTB riding on the Estrella technical loop, so I still like that trail system. I am not a big fan of White Tanks - not much of a challenge and really boring. Both of the aforementioned parks have an entrance fee which I think is ridiculous, but not going to break the bank. I still love T100 for free though.

Summary:
I just rode this trail for the first time and am absolutely amazed that something this sweet exists in Phoenix. The trail is HARD PACK, in fantastic condition, and has a variety of technical riding. It can be quite easy or quite hard depending on what parts you ride and how you ride it. Lots of little up and downs that if ridden slowly are fun trying to ride fast exhausting. The outer loop is a beautiful hammerfest of a good time and climbing some of the hills are lung busters with some really tight twisty descents that will test your switchback ability. A long drive out there, but well worth it.

FYI-When you park at the school, ride about 1/3 of a mile west of the school and turn left at the first barricade that you see on the left. That is the start of the trail network.

Recommended Route:
Just take random turns and see where it leads you.
