Trail 8 - North Phoenix Technical
2 reviews
4.5 of 5
Trail 8 starts at 40th Street, and heads almost due South for approximately 3 miles, loops around a small mountain, then heads back to 40th Street. The first mile of Trail 8 is pretty technical. Not as tough as National, but certainly an attention getter. Once to the top of the first saddle, the remainder of Trail 8 is totally rideable, and very enjoyable: steep decents, with a couple of 12" drops, lung coughing climbs - what mountain biking should be. Plus, there's far less traffic, compared to Trail 100.
Summary: The previous reviewer made a pretty good description. The trail is not easy, but is rideable and pristine, especially when compared to Trail #100. There is a maze of trails intersecting each other, so plan ahead and bring a map and compass. The trail is definitely technical but is still rideable. A real treat.
Recommended Route: Myself, I just printed out a map I found on the internet and found the trail off of Trail #100. I did #8, #302, and #1A.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Trail #100, and #1A.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

, from Scottsdale, AZ
Summary: This route has become my new favorite, particularly with the closure of so many of the trails in Scottsdale (for the summer of 2002). The climbs are challenging, the decents are a blast, and the technical stuff increases your skill with each ride. It seems highly likely that that first saddle will entail 100 feet of hike-a-bike, and the rockiness of the first mile, may put you off, but it's a small price to pay. Overall, the trail is just a blast. Perhaps the best "quick" out and back loop in all of Phoenix.
Recommended Route: Start at the parking lot at 40th St, south of Shea Blvd. The trailhead is right there, running parallel to the more commonly used Jeep trail. Heading south, you'll continue uphill for a solid mile. From the top of the first saddle, decend down, keep left at the first fork, and climb up two more saddles. At the top of the first saddle, ride the driveway for 100 yards, then hang a right and get back on the single track. At the next major saddle, take the right hander down hill (back North), and enjoy a great, slightly technical decent all the way back to 40th Street. Optionally, after 3 miles of riding, head over to Trail 304 and then on to 1A, to lengthen your ride, and add more technical fun.
Other recommended trails in the same area: McDowell Mountain Regional Park & Pima/Dynamite.
