Ridge Line Trail (South Mountain)
3 reviews
 3 of 5

Lots of climbing, very beautiful desert vegetation, 3 technical uphills and one mother of a downhill. Ends up hooking up with Javalina and Mormon.

Trail Directions
From the gualdalupe/48th Street parking lot for South Mountain, go down the trail marked "Bikes" on the North Side of the parking lot. The trail leads into Loop 1. Go right (East) on Loop 1 till you get to the top of the ridge and pass electricity poles. Look for a small single track going off on the North and go down it. This is it.

Ridden Trail:
Ridden Once

Summary:
This trail is not very long and connects Beverly Canyon to Javalina/Mormon Loop trails along a...ridge line. Imagine that eh? The trail is up and down and up and down and steep and rocky and loose all over. I tried to ride this trail once and did not find it a very enjoyable ride. Its far more popular with hikers than bikers who frequent the trail around sunset because of its easy access and awesome views of the Valley.

Recommended Route:
If you are going to ride this trail make it part of larger ride around South Mountain.

Ridden Trail:

Summary:
Great way to get in some climbing and see a different side of South Mountain. I used to ride this every couple of weeks before moving to Flagstaff. Ridgeline itself is steep up, steep down, and loose everywhere, but all good fun. Not for true beginners. If I close my eyes I can still see one of my old Supergo co-workers going OTB and snacking on some rocks....by the way, you owe me a beer, and you know who you are!! Someone please let me know if the Devil of South Mountain still prowls the trails. Some day, if you're very quiet, you may get a glimpse of him. Don't try to keep up with him though, he'll only make you look like a rookie.

Recommended Route:
Park at ramadas, take loop 1 to javalina, up javalina, left on ridgeline, back on beverly canyon to either loop 2 or fire road and back to parking lot.

Summary:
I liked it a bunch, although I had to walk some in the beginning. The views are spectacular and the furious fast descent at the end is worth the effort.

Recommended Route:
Just like the description.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
ALMOST anything at SoMo.
