Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail is fun... up to a point. The trail gets rough and miserable just as the forest opens up to a nice savanna type environment on top of Anderson Mesa. It's deeply rutted and rough and no fun. It's the kind of trail you have to get off and walk on even though it's flat ground. Too bad too, Marshall Lake is quite pretty, when it has water in it. Recommended Route: Turn around when you hit the open field on top of Anderson Mesa and it gets rough and rutty. It gets miserable. This is shortly after FR 9481Q, then there's a climb out of the valley and after that the flat area makes the climb seem like a good time. Basically once you stop having fun, turn around and head back to Flag, it's not going to get any better. If you do make it all the way out to Marshall Lake, try to find FR128B (it's hard to find, should be your first right as you head south on FR128) and take it back towards flag to where the AZ Trail gets fun again. Other recommended trails in the same area: None of the trails south of town by Fisher Point are all that exciting. You might find a loop of Fay Canyon to Skunk Canyon to be decent. The section of the AZ Trail from the trailhead on Old Walnut Canyon Road to below Fisher Point is pretty fun since it's somewhat remote. Best ridden east to west. I usually do it as a big loop on my touring bike riding out there and back from there on the road.
The best trails in Flagstaff are north of town, in the Dry Lake Hills and on Mt. Elden.

, from Flagstaff, AZ Summary: This is not an advance trail. I've had friends take their baby seats out there. As soon as you hit the AZ trail and head towards marshall lake their is a steep climb out of walnut canyon, less than a mile long but it gets the blood flowing. after that it's easy money, some of the trail will have a lot of washout, mostly endo sized boulders, but still not deadly. Recommended Route: Lake Mary Rd which intersects I-17 about 1/2 mile south of Flagstaff. Head down Lake Mary Rd. about 2 miles untill you pass a water treatment plant on your left, just past that is a forest service road on you left, take it and get out the bikes. Head down the road until you see a cable blocking the road to the left, throw the bikes over, this is ok, the cable is to prevent cars from trashing walnut canyon. Follow the singletrack down skunk canyon, go right at the first intersection, about another 1/2 mile go left at the Y, then watch for AZ trail signs, follow them out to Marshall lake, have a picnic lunch and head back. FYI, marshall lake is dry. Other recommended trails in the same area: When you hit the Az trail, follow the signs to the left to fischer point instead of marshall lake, this is a fun 1 mile climb that is kind of technical. Keep going all the way to Walnut Canyon National Park Visitors center if your in for at least 30 miles round trip or have a car picking you up, this trail is advanced so beware. Or, just play in the area hitting the fischer point climb, bombing down, heading toward marshall lake up out of the canyon, then back down, then up sandy's canyon and back down, this is great to get in some climbing that's not too hard or long.
