A nice trail with very little up hill. Lots to look at, good view of Thumb Butte. I think it's 2 or three miles, I've never measured. A good variety of conditions: hard pack, loose, granite, etc.
Park in the Thumb Butte parking lot, follow the loop road (dirt) about 1.5 miles (I could be wrong about the dist. I've never measured) the first right turn is where the trail starts. It takes you right back down to the parking lot.
Summary: Do not ride this trail from the Thumb Butte parking lot. Doing this makes the ride patheticaly short. Instead, start at the top of Copper Baisin road, ride up the dirt road to the look-out, and catch white rock on the way down. If you can't do this, at least ride up and down the trail, as Thumb Butte road sucks.
BE EXCELLENT TO EACHOTHER!
Recommended Route: Start at copper basin to make it a longer ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: granite basin trails, groom creek, spruce mountain...

Summary: Oh yeah, your book sucks Cosmic ray, it has like 3 prescott rides, two of them extremely "sorry" rides, the book does not represent our area at all as far as mountain biking. Maybe this is a good thing and will keep the traffic down, but there are more miles of trails here and in the nearby Bradshaws that almost no one could ever ride them in a few decades.
Cosmic, your book isn't too bad for some other places, like Flagstaff, but it is terrible in representing Prescott.
Recommended Route: Connect 332 with this ride, you get to climb back up another single track and make a "loop" out of white rock to the north, you can also make a loop out of the ride with some single track to the south on the other side of the road, but this single track is short and not great. Thumb Butte is convienient and usually cooler than other areas in the summer, but the riding consists of a lot of fragmented singletrack sections that are fairly short, they can be combined for pretty big rides but there aren't any epic or great rides here, just nice convenient stuff for "after work".
Other recommended trails in the same area: Don't know all the names;
Single Track from cattle guard area(but now cattle guard is gone!)
Single Track opposite of outlook area
Single Track that drops off of Mt Francis
Other various single tracks on south side and middle of Thumb Butte area.
I do not recommend West Spruce Mtn trail (near top of Thumb Butte Road) this trail is extremely loose and washed out and not much fun, and it doesn't take you anywhere you want to be either.

Summary: It's ok, we ride full on DH bikes UP thumb butte road and ride down the trails that come off of it. This one is probably the least fun, not very technical, some nice water bars at one point though. It's very short, that is the downfall.
Recommended Route: uhh, its dead simple.

Ridden Trail: Once a year

Summary: A rolling whoop-de-do twisty single track that does anything but straight.
Recommended Route: Have a look at my book, Cosmic Ray's Fat Tire Tales and Trails: Arizona Mountain Bike Guide. Josh from Bikesmith showed me the way. We mapped it out pretty carefully. This trail rocks.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Spruce Mountain, Granite Mountain, Thumb Butte Loop

Ridden Trail: Once a month

Summary: I like riding this trail from the parking lot and finishing at the white rock. This way you can really enjoy the technical rock climbs and tight sections. Riding down it is fun, but you should ride up it first. Since you have to ride up to the top to start it anyways, you might as well ride the trail up instead of the road. There are a few rock sections that are really rewarding to ride up. The only drawback is how short the trail is, so you have to connect up with other trails to make a longer ride.
Recommended Route: from bottom up to top.
Other recommended trails in the same area: West Spruce has some sweet views. Try Clark Springs too.
