Trail 100
28 reviews
 3.75 of 5

Trail 100 is 22 miles of rolling fun. It is not tecnically difficult, but is very fun and fast. From Dreamy Draw you can head East or West. Both sections are fun, but the trail to the East is best.

Summary:
I see far too many “it’s too easy” or “it’s too flat” reviews here not to speak up. I live right off of trail 100 and can honestly say that I’ve see few trail systems with as many options for all difficulty levels (yes, even you “it’s not National” people); especially so friggin’ close to the center of a huge city.

Here’s the deal with T100- as it says above, there are 22 miles between the endpoints on the trail, however, if you were to add in all of the fully legal side trails (220, 1A, 1B, 220A, etc.) I’d bet that the whole thing is well over 75 miles of consistent, fun singletrack. The best part is that you can chose your poison even within a larger group because most spurs end up back on the main trail. For example, there are rolling wide sections for beginners or speed demons (Dreamy Draw T100 East); Great swooping technical baby head drops for intermediates to learn how to flow with some nice steep climbs that will challenge almost any good rider (Described below); Wonderful technical climbing routes through Dreamy Draw Park with some real drops (sprinkled with blood today to make it real) that would be classified as “advanced” just about anywhere; the ridge trails and a few others in the park offer full-on, best have a long travel bike sort of fun with chimneys, 3 foot boulder drops, big exposure and rotten soil.

My point is that people tend to stick to the most obvious trails and then belly-ache because it didn’t meet their expectations. Instead, what they should have done is take the time to explore and when in doubt, head UP!

Recommended Route:
Suggested Routes
Beginners
7th St - West to 19th Ave (yes, there is a legal 100 extension beyond Central)
Dreamy Draw – East to 44th St

Intermediate-Advanced with more difficult suggestions added
7th St. to Dreamy Draw Loop (runs tons of trail with only about 50% repeated)
Go right up steep 1A extension after passing the Point property- tough climbing leads to a nice ridge with a fun decent
After Cave Creek stay high on 1A and track around 2 great hills full of FAST trail (or after 1st hill head right between to ridge for steep decent followed by a challenging technical climb that rejoins 1A above a rocky decent to 100)
Flow through the lava section, top out on ridge, descend through occasionally sketchy talus and then up serpentine climb (steep followed by steeper and technical) then drop into DD park
FOLLOW HORSE TUNNEL SIGNS at junction and climb brief but nice lava flow at the tunnel exit.
Join 100 for about 100 feet, look left for 220A sign on indistinct trail- leads to gnarly drop followed by another climb until rejoining 100 for about 400m- head south on another 220 spur that winds up and through scrub until heading back down to 220 (there is a really tough and lose trail to the left in the middle of this spur- take it up to the ridgeline and bring your full-face helmet)
Take 220 down and then back up to the south until intersecting the main trail bisecting the park (1A) climb wide trail and head left at top until a singletrack starts on the right; follow this track to top of ridge and drop off the back side for a heck of a fun downhill (beware of the hikers, the trail can be lose and stopping at full tilt difficult!)
Head back to parking lot on trail to right and back on to 100 heading west.
Here you can either head back the way you came with two stiff climbs or head to the right 100m after the Rt51 tunnel (before the first climb) this route has one of the toughest non-technical climbs on 100 and then plummets back to 100 after the ridge.
Stay high again on the 1A spurs or drop down to the flat stuff at the base for a rest as you spin home.

I'm amazing that people say that there isn't much riding around here... compared to what? Durango? Moab?

Summary:
I was coming to Phoenix for a couple of days from the frozen north and willing to ride just about any trail. It was hard to tell from the varied reviews here what I might expect.

I started at Dreamy Draw and went west, and quickly got my heart rate up in the first few hills. While they are a lot rockier than the dirt trails I am used to in the midwest, I really enjoyed the change.
The varied terrian--from one section I wasn't comfortable going down and a couple I couldn't make it up, to the fast flats--really makes this a fun trail. On this day, I rode all the way to the other end and back to Dreamy Draw.

The next day I didn't have as much time, so I just went east from Dreamy Draw to Tatum and back. This section was my favorite for its mix of moderate hills, up and downs and flats.

I found all of the hikers and other bikers to be very courteous. I am envious of the countless combinations of trails that are connected, allowing for lots of different rides, all right within the city.

Recommended Route:
I enjoyed all of it--favorite is the Tatum to Dreamy Draw section.

Summary:
This is an excellent trail. It is quite a lot of work to ride from Central to Tatum and back. If you don't have the energy, turn around at the Dreamy Draw park, after refilling your camelback. I have ridden from 7th ave, south of Peoria, but the parking is kinda ghetto. That portion of the ride is good for a warmup, but is the least interesting part. Take a lot of water in the summer time! Also, refill your water at the drinking fountain at the bathrooms at Dreamy Draw park in both directions. This is a very diverse trail, and should be ridden with a full suspension bike. I have ridden the Cave Creek to 51 portion with a rigid, and enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as with full suspension. There are lots of big rocks here, and a few very steep sections. If it weren't for this technical portion between 22nd st and 51, this trail would be quite easy. That part changes the entire ride. I would absolutely recommend starting at either end, not at the Dreamy Draw park. Either at Tatum or 40th st, or Central or 7th ave will provide for adequate warmup. Starting at the 51 mandates an immediate climb in either direction. Please be courteous to the hikers and equestrians (although I have never seen anyone on a horse on this trail). I want to be able to ride this trail for the rest of my life here in Phoenix. It is great to be in the middle of the city, yet seemingly in the middle of the desert. After crossing 7th St, keep to the left. There is a portion of the trail between 7th and Cave Creek, going east, where the signs indicate that the trail goes to the right, climbing up a steep hill. Stay to the left, ignoring the marker unless you want a group of steep climbs, with some moderately technical decents. This is a commonly used alternative to the trail, and is not a closed route. I have seen most of the other bikers take this route. This trail can be ridden by beginners, except for the part between 22nd St and 51. Either ride around this part, or hike it. You can take some of the neighborhood streets, and take the bike overpass over the 51. Otherwise, suck it up!! Some people recommend a shuttle at either end. I don't think this is necessary, unless it is during the very hot days of summer.

Recommended Route:
Central ave to Tatum and back.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Pima and Dynamite. Ride it before it turns into a golf course! Also see Stuart at the Spokesman Bike shop in Tatum Ranch for a night ride of the Union Hills Loop every Wednesday.

Summary:
Phoenix is not exactly a haven of trails. I ride this one becuse I ride and it's there. I also ride this trail because it's not packed with 5,000 other people like every other trail in this miserable wasteland. I gladly put up with rocks, dust, and the horse poo in exchange for not having to ride next to one more novice on a huffy who walks over every little bump and doesn't know trail eticate. Ride this at night and you dont have to worry about the drab scenery. I rate it . . . good as the rest of the desert.

Recommended Route:
Park just south of 19th and Thunderbird.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
McDowell Mtn. Park - ride sport + competitive. Estrella Mtn. Park - ride competitive and then go back for the technical section. Watchout for a tan woman on a hardtail in dark grey spandex, she'll come out of no where and pass you like you're standing still!
