Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail sucks! We had it recommended to us from a bike shop employee in town and by a trail guide book that has never let us down. Man, were we miss-led!
So the climb is totally challenging and works you OUT! Which is cool if it's worth while. All I can say is I had to dismount my bike for fallen trees every two minutes up AND down this mountain. The downhill technical that I was so looking forward to was just loose baby-head rocks that sucked all the fun out of the "sweet banked turns" I kept hearing about. And, when you think it's over and you're at the bottom, it adds insult to injury by making you climb out of a lower section in sand! As if the crappy single track and killer climb hadn't handed your anus to you already. I will never ride this trail again. Recommended Route: Drive right by this trail and on to the next one.

Cross Country Rider Summary: OK, so Vic and Jeff from Phoenix are soft! Trust me, the uphill climb is an a$% kicker, but the view at the top and the flowing down hill with twisties are a rip! Last rode today. ALL trails up North have rocks, I have been on much worse. There is some loose stuff but easily handled unless you are a complete newbie, so what, walk it! The largest drops are no more than 3ft, drop you weight back and drop in to some fun!! Some roots can be bunny hopped - recommended to keep your flow. The trails in Phoenix must be really wimpy, Cowboy up and let it loose or ride a golf cart! Seriously a 5 inch bike would be perfect here but not necessary. Biggest challenge on this trail is the climb and you WILL hike and bike unless you have the hill smashing quads and lung capacity of a guy named Lance. One reviewer said he cleaned the entire trail, the climb up too? I seriously doubt it! A great ride in gorgeous Ponderosa Pine singletrack, what else could you want? Recommended Route: Start climbing to the L to top, then down R about 5.25 miles to trail head. Repeat if necessary! Other recommended trails in the same area: Thumb Butte, unless you can't handle Mtn terrain like Vic and Jeff.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Hey, yes so there is a monster climb on this ride, and it will leave you in a lactic acid drunken haze, but its worth it, trust me. Great views at the top and then a righteous 5.somthing mile decent filled with banked turns, waterbars, and rock gardens. There is simply nothing bad to say about this trail, except that when riding down stay far behind your buddy (flying rocks). Also, do not ride this trail after a storm, or a really windy day, because fallen trees will block the trail like every 50 yards. Recommended Route: up the short side down the long side. If you have more time, get up and do it again! Other recommended trails in the same area: white rock, granit basin...

Cross Country Rider Summary: Yes there is some up on this trail. when it goes dwn its fun and all its just not long enough. If you wont more of this kind of riding? you then should try Mnt Elden in Flaggstaff. If climbing isent your thing then try driving to the top. Spruce mnt is where i broke my first frame when i hit a big rock in the trail should of bunny hoped it. There was a time when i was there and going fast through the single track came flying around a turn and met a 1,000lb horse head on, it threw the rider off the trail and down the side of the mnt. Had to tend to her wounds then find the horse @ the btm of the trail. Watch out we are not the only ones useing this trail.

, from Phoenix, Az, USA Summary: I've only ridden this trail twice. The first time was approx. 4 years ago. The second time was yesterday (6/8/03). I was disappointed that the trail has degraded as much as it has. I don't attribute this to mountain bikers, but weather, horses and lack of mountain bikers. The problem is the abundance of softball sized rocks that blanket this trail. They are large enough to throw off your line, so it is difficult to maintain decent control. Or on the climb up, cause your back tire to break loose (and I am running 2.25 wide IRC El Gato trials tires which are designed for hooking up). If there was more bike traffic, these stones would eventually be worked off the trail making it a much better ride (as I have witnessed on the trails I ride in the Phoenix area). I was able to clean this trail up and down, but due to the rocks screwing up my lines, there were a few areas where I had to go back and try again. If you are in the Prescott area and want a much better ride, go to Granite Mountain. There are a number of trails that are not as rocky. Or if there are rock's, they are large enough that they don't move and are fun for climbing (for those of us that like Trials riding). The only thing decent about Spruce Mountain was the climb and tree cover. Recommended Route: Same as previously stated (clockwise on Tr.307). Other recommended trails in the same area: Granite Mountain (all the trails in the park are nice).
