Munds Wagon Trail

4.2 of 5
The trail climbs 1100 feet and runs right next to Schnebly Hill Road all the way up to Merry-Go-Round Rock. It is brand new hand made single track with plenty of technical dips, drops, rips and rails to amuse you and with some fast sections as well. Lots of great views all the way. Check out all the spires, monuments and wicked cool hoo-doos. If you start at the top, you can connect single track trails all the way to Dry Creek Road in West Sedona and beyond. At least 20 miles of connected single track. Get a couch potato pal to drop you at the Schnebly Hill road exit on I-17. Ride dirt Schnebly Hill Road 11 miles to the top of Munds Wagon Trail. Next, link up with Huckaby, Jim Thompson, Jordan, Teacup and Thunder Mountain Trails all the way to Dry Creek Road Trail system. Whew! Bring some water and a snack.
From the "Y" junction of hwy 89A and hwy 179 in Sedona, go south 0.3 miles and take a left onto Schnebly Hill road. Go 1 mile until the pavement ends and the trailhead is in the parking lot on the left.
The single track is fun, a few water bars at the top, at the bottom a few places to session off of big rocks and a few little climbs back up. I rode my DH bike up the road and then rode the trail back down, I've also done it on my FR rig riding up and down the single track. This is the only thing you can shuttle in sedona, but it is fun. Sedona trails are not better than prescott for riding(if for nothing else, there is about 3-5x more trails in prescott of all different types), but sometimes I come here just to change it up a bit, since it is different. This is a pretty solid "3" trail, if I could give it a 3.5 I would, 4 is kinda stretching it and I'd rate some of the longer trails in prescott as a 4, 5 is reserved for "all time best" trails in my book.
Recommended Route: Up and down, pretty hard to mess it up, although the turnoff at the top is a little tricky, you can also ride*push a little* on the continuation trail to the very top of the plateu, this is to the right of the normal trialhead for munds, but its not very interesting.

Summary: I love this run! It is super fast up top with just enough rocks and water bars to keep you on your toes. There are some hairy switchbacks and dry creek crossings on the lower section. The diverse trees and trail (dirt, slickrock, babyhead)make this run A+.
Recommended Route: I ride the road up . . . and no I don't wear panties. I spin up the road to save energy and time for the other trails around.
Other recommended trails in the same area: secret slickrock, chicken point, dead horse state park

Summary: Good trail for intermediate and up or beginners who don't mind walking their bike at steep spots on the way up. Not too technical on the way down except for a couple of tight swithbacks. Deep sand in a couple of washes. The trail crosses Schnebly Hill Rd several times so it's an option to weiner out and take the road to the top. This trail actually continues past the 4 mile mark at Merry go Round rock, paralleling the road for another mile or so before branching off to either Hot Loop or Jack's Canyon trails. There is a variety of terrain including famous sedona hardpack, little bits of slickrock, sand, and busted up basalt towards the top. The views get better the higher you get. Clear it and beer it...
Recommended Route: Out and back from the parking lot, or shuttle to the top and link it with Huckaby, etc. etc.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Huckaby, Submarine Rock.

Summary: oIt is a very do-able out and back (up and down), but also it is a superb way to link up a whole bunch of trails in West Sedona. Some of the best views in Sedona.
Recommended Route: As above.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Huckaby, Jim Thompson, Jordan, Secret, Teacup, Thunder Mountain and Dry Creek Trails.
