Heart Trail

Another option in the Dry Lake Hills/Elden area. Instead of heading down towards Shultz Pass Road again (assuming you started there), head towards 89A and east Flagstaff on Heart Trail. Another down hill option for your efforts of making it up Elden. Wide open views of Sunset crater and eastern Arizona, red rocky terrian, just different from the monotony of Dry Lake Hills.
PS. I cant believe this hasn't been reviewed yet, symtomatic of the creditability of these reviews.
Summary: I thought this was one of the most fun technical rides I've ever been on! If you don't like to be cognitively engaged with a trail don't bother riding this one.
Recommended Route: I rode up Elden Look Out fire road which climbs up to 9,300 feet. It is about 6 miles up hill without a break. If you have heart problems at high altitude be careful. Then 12 miles of downhill fun.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Ride them all!

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Well lets start this off right. I ride right past this trail all the time. I had never ridden it because it looks like a very 5hitty biking trail, and I love sunset trail. But then I read these reviews. The first guy said there were drops and to ride down it instead of up. Then the rocky moron said it was a very cool trail. But he must like rocks and not going very fast. Sure it is the fastest way off the mountain but he was not talking about speed. It is only 2 miles long, and it drops from almost the top to the bottom in that distance, through an old forest fire area(can you say erosion and no shade, no trees, only rocks). There are extremely tight switchbacks every 30 feet so you can't get any speed. And the fun drops that are talked about are right before and after these switchbacks so it's not like you can get big air off them. And the loose, big, annoying, stupid rocks are all this trail is made from all the way down, except, where the trail is eroded away to a nice V. I guess if technical riding involves this kind of crap I would prefer a road bike. And the trail drops you off on the east side of the mountain where there is nothing but a long ride back to your house, or a long ride back to your car, waiting for you. And if your very lucky, the wind won't be blowing too hard across the treeless dusty area. I guess "rocky" just feels at home there because it reminds him of his desert home. I would call myself a somewhat extreme rider with a full suspension bike with 6" of travel and hydrolic disc brakes, and because of the nature of this I think it would be just as fun to ride strait off the side of the mountain because "it is the fastest way off the mountain", and you wouldn't have to deal with the switchbacks. Can you tell that I hated this trail? And why would someone want to spoil their whole day long ride by going down this trail when the sunset trail offers more speed, more big air, more fun, and more downhill, and more of a chance of not destroying your bike, and puts you down on the correct side of the mountain, and, and, and! I am just still angry about the good reviews of this trail. The only way I would go on this trail again would be if I were hiking, but even so there are better trails that go up the mountain than the heart trail. What I am trying to say is that this trail is a total waste of a good ride up mount elden. Don't ride it if you are looking to have fun. Take the sunset trail or the brookbank or oldham or little bear or the maintained lookout access road. That is all I'm going to say at this time
Recommended Route: Don't even try riding up this trail. The only way you might even want to ride it is down, but I wouldn't recommend that either.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Any other trail

Summary: Don't get lulled into Dry Lake Hills; challenge yourself. Head down something technical you sissy Flagstaff not fast enough to ride road bicyclists.
Recommended Route: From the top
Other recommended trails in the same area: Anything you find that is remotely technical (and not rocky ridge; it's flat)

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: I rode this once up any then back down. It hasn't been reveiwed yet because it isn't realy a fun trail to ride. Going up is no fun and practically impossible because it is very steep with some drops and abrupt swithbacks and the trail surface is made of loose cobbly rocks and sand and stuff like that. Trying to climb on this stuff doesn't go so well because you spin your back wheel, and then you cant get started again. Going down itsn't quite so bad, but those sharp swithbacks and drops on corners and off camber spots all on loose rocky terrain on a steep slope make for quite the hazardous trip. If you want to ride this, go right ahead, but for most riders its not a recommendable trail.
Recommended Route: I dont recommend any route, unless you want something different and steep and loose
Other recommended trails in the same area: Almost all Flagstaff trails are great. If you're a beginner or a bad climber there aren't many trails her eyou can do, so get in shape an aquire some technical skills so that you can enjoy our awesome Flagstaff trails. Just know that you're going to have to do about 2000(give or take some) verticle feet of climbing to get to a lot of the best trails here.
