Russian River Trail

Average Rating:    (4.67 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 3

This is one of the best trails in Alaska. It consists of everything from views of glaciers, to viewing the sockeye salmon run up the Russian River to spawn(of course the timing of the run must be right), and to some great singletrack riding. This trail consists of many types of terrain where the trail travels through subalpine forests of hemlock, birch and many tall grasses and other vegetation. The preferred route by riders is to ride from the Cooper Lake trail head to the Russian Lakes trail head. Beginning at the Cooper Lake trail head travel down this well marked singletrack trail along Cooper Lake and Cooper Mountain. At mile 5 the Resurrection River trail intersects. Stay straight on the Russian River trail. At this point there should be views of glaciers in the distance south of the trail. At mile 9 there is a U.S. Forest Service Cabin near the shores of Upper Russian Lake. This is 1 of 3 cabins along this trail. The others are Aspen Flats at mile 12 and Lower Russian Lake, mile 18.5. These cabins must be reserved by calling the Forest Service. Continue traveling down the trail where you will be in and out of the woods and along the shores of the Russian River. This is a good spot to see the salmon running up the river which have already turned red. Further down the trail you will travel through a 30 year old burn area and soon will be able to see Lower Russian Lake. At the North end of the lower lake the trail turns to a maintained gravel path. Soon there will be an intersection(~mile 20) where you can take a left to go down to the waterfalls following the signs. There are 2 viewing platforms for watching the salmon make there way through the falls. At the intersection continue down the gravel path to the Russian Lakes trail head.

Summary:
Good, pretty nice singletrack throughout. A few miles of gravel double-track at the Russian Lakes trailhead, but otherwise nice. Watch out for bears, there is pretty high activity around this area.

Summary:
AWESOME SINGLETRACK. THIS TRAIL CAN BE RIDDEN BY ALL SKILL LEVELS. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW LONG A RIDER WANTS TO GO.
I WROTE THE FIRST DESCRIPTION. JUST THOUGHT I WOULD ADD A COOL ROUTE. A BUDDY AND I TURNED THIS TRAIL INTO AN AWESOME 40 MILE LOOP. WE START AT THE KENAI RIVER BRIDGE AND BOAT LAUNCH. WE CROSSED THE HIGHWAY AND RODE THE 11 MILES ON SNUG HARBOR RD TO THE COOPER LAKE TRAIL HEAD WHERE WE STARTED ONE OF THE BEST SINGLETRACK TRAILS I HAVE RIDDEN. AFTER THE TRAIL WE FINISHED THE LAST 8 MILES OR SO BACK DOWN THE STERLING HIGHWAY TO THE CAR. IF YOU GOT THE LUNGS IT IS DEFINETELY WORTH THE TRIP. GREAT RIDE!

Recommended Route:
START AT COOPER LAKE TRAIL HEAD AND FINISH AT RUSSIAN LAKES TRAILHEAD. LESS UPHILL AND BETTER DOWNHILLS

Other recommended trails in the same area:
RESURRECTION PASS, JOHNSON PASS
