Nugget Creek

Phenomenal trail. The trail is a dirt road for the first bit, then becomes a muddy ATV trail. Don't despair! There's only 1.5 miles of muddy stuff, then it eases into a dry and beautiful mountain trail. Just beyond Nugget Creek is a public use cabin. This is a first-come, first-served cabin. Maximum stay is 14 days. Beyond the cabin the trail continues up the hill for superb views and alpine hiking, and a historic copper mine. You can also explore the nearby Kuskulana glacier and views of Mt. Blackburn. Note that there is also a privately owned cabin on the hill. Man, what a lucky bastard!

Trail Directions
13 Miles past Chitina (the settlement of Strelna) on the MacCarthy Road. Look for the round white sign on the North side of the road. Follow the road about 2.3 miles to the Trailhead. Look for the big handpainted trail sign. Don't take the left uphill fork in the road, stay to the right and cross the creek. The trailhead is marked with a sign across the creek, a bear has been cheiwing on the sign.

Summary:
We hiked this 14 mile trail to the cabin in one day (end of September). Took 7.5 hours walking with backpacks. The trail is easy and well defined; mostly level but a few gentle inclines here and there. Extremely muddy around mile 2 but gradually gets better. There are 4 creeks to cross; one immediately at the trail head and one just before the cabin; one at the half way camp, and another maybe a mile past the half way camp. There is an easement marker at mile 9.5 and that is the only mile marker you'll find. The views from the trail are mostly of the surrounding forest but if it's clear you will see mountains and a canyon. Plan to be out here at least 3 days. Maximum stay at the cabin is 14 days. If cabin is occupied, there is a camp site on the right side of the trail before the trail opens up by Nugget Creek. Have fun!
