ARCTIC VALLEY ROAD

1 MILE OF PAVEMENT THEN 6+ MILES OF GRAVEL ROAD COMPLETE WITH WASHBOARD BUMPS,LOOSE CORNERS,WATER RUN-OFF AND MAYBE SOME SNOW AT THE TOP.WE USED THIS AS A SPRING TRAINING RIDE BECAUSE THE ROAD IS MOSTLY THAWED OUT IN THE SPRING WHILE ALL THE GOOD TRAILS ARE STILL UNDER THE SNOW.TIME TRIALS ARE RUN ON THIS ROAD DURING THE SUMMER,A RACE TO THE TOP!MY BEAT TIME WAS 56 MINUTES,PRETTY SAD AS I THINK THE RECORD IS UNDER 30 MINUTES!A GREAT WAY TO GET THE LUNGS AND LEGS BACK IN THE GAME AFTER WINTER.THE RETURN TRIP DOWN IS THE PAYOFF,JUST BE CAREFUL OF THE BLIND CORNERS!THIS ROAD HAS A FAIR AMOUNT OF VEHICLE TRAVEL SO WATCH OUT 'CAUSE THEY DON'T EXPECT BIKERS TO BE UP THERE.MAKE SURE TO PACK A WIND BREAKER AND GLOVES FOR THE TRIP DOWN.A GOOD TRAINING RIDE GIVE IT A TRY.

Summary:
This was the first trail I attempted on a mountain bike I started from Jber. The ride was challenging climbing but very rewarding; very bumpy on the way down really hurt my hands but then again I was on a novaro ponderosa. I completed the 19mile ride in 2.5hours; I just picked up a 2014 trek x caliber 8 and will bee giving it another go. There was a few vehicles in the trail but not enough to keep me from going again. I did see some bear poo on the trail but I also ride with my .40 just incase things get WILD. I would agree with packing a wind breaker for the trip down, it got really cold.

Summary:
It is a grueling ride up the Arctic Valley access road from the golf course to the ski area. It takes just under an hour to ride up the hill. It isn’t that difficult at all, just grinding up hill for an hour. The ride back down makes the ride worth while. My friend and I passed two cars going down at an average speed of 35 mph, with a top speed of 44 mph. One must watch out for several switchbacks on the way down.

Recommended Route:
Up road, and back down.
