Power Line Pass
15 reviews
 4.07 of 5

The trail is a combination of poorly maintained gravel road and single track that follows a gas pipeline. It is very rocky, prone to high winds and sudden weather changes. The trail starts off as a gradual mile long downhill and then flattens out for a while. The middle section is composed of rolling hills and two small creeks. The last 1 1/2 miles is a gruelling rock strewn uphill that progressivly gets steeper. It ends at the top of the pass with a awesome view of the valley and Powerline Pass. People can choose to continue down the other side towards the Seward Highway but you will need to have a ride arranged to pick you up. It is approximately 6 miles to the top of the pass.

Summary:
This should get divided into two trails. Going up Powerline AND going down Powerline to the town of Indian. Very scenic ride here folks. Relatively easy going up the valley until you need to go up the pass. Going down is something else. Should only be done by advance/expert riders. The down side to Indian can kill you. VERY VERY VERY STEEP. Must have working great brakes. When weather is right this is an incredible ride. Another one of those must rides.

Summary:
A cold windy day, tons of elevation gain, snow, broken chain, still an awesome ride. The snow covered peaks surrounding the valley made the ride even more dramatic. Bring enough clothes to survive a blizzard, but have somewhere to store them when you are crushing the climbs.

Recommended Route:
To truly enjoy the 3500 ft of elevation you must start in the Anchorage Bowl, somewhere. We left from Muldoon, rode through Campbell tract to Hilltop, up hilltop, to Prospect heights, up Gasline, to Glen Alps Parking lot, up to the pass and down into Indian. We had howling winds and 30 degree temperatures, and it was still awesome.

The miles of trails all over the place. Just go, and you'll find new ones. I leave from my house in the south side of Muldoon, and always find new trails from there to Glen Alps. Bring the bear spray and lot's of powerbars/water for the climbs.

Summary:
This is a good trail in Anchorage to experience the massive amounts of vertical available to us in this fine state. Its AK man, variable weather, prone to crazy winds and loose surface conditions mean be prepared. I have a beefed up RM Slayer and I feel sorry for the poor bastrds doing it on hardtails w/o disks. I wear full pads going down to Indian cause its easy to flay your skin in all the gravel. A hoodie is a good idea cause its cold.
A shuttle is a good idea too; where you leave it depends on how big you want to go. Pray for a tail wind along the highway back home and park at Potter Marsh. Also try starting at Prospect Heights.

Recommended Route:
same. up and over baby.

Summary:
7 miles from that parking and pass the two lakes you should be able to encounter this steep climb. Its impossible to climb it with your bike. PLEASE DONT TRY TO DOWNHILL THIS ...I recommend this downhill for pros only.! yes i did it and i got jacked up and both my tires blew out on me. Its a nice downhill though, i wont mind tryin it again when i recover. But anywyz this pass is a good trainin for those goin for pro. I recommend lots of brake pads if you dont use a disc. Its worth the pedalin and the sweat. make sure you dont forget to pump up your tires coz your gonna be goin through loose gravel and rocks. Bring some kits for blown out tires and medical stuff you might need it. Really awesome ride and country side. Lots of hot women :) hehehe.

Recommended Route:
start from flattop park parking lot

Other recommended trails in the same area:
jhonsons pass, hilltop, ressurection pass and tony Knowles coastal trail.
