Summary:
For a lover of technical trails, Birch Hill was fairly boring. I didn't see any singletrack--the whole place is x-country ski trails (about as wide as a lane and a half on the road) with short grass/dirt. Don't get me wrong, some of the hills were quite challenging physically, but I just seemed to get bored with the place after about 30 minutes. Likely not my cup of tea, you may love it. Mmm...smelled like manure the whole way (you are in farm country).

I'm surprised that folks give this one a 4 or 5--seems that with all these mountains, there's gotta be great singletrack in the area.

Recommended Route:
I followed the signs from Steese and made a right and immediately came up on the sign for the place. Head down the road and park by the large building. There's a trail map up there.

Trying to find other more technical trails before we leave the area. These guys seem to have the goods - http://www.fairbankscycleclub.org/Rides/

Summary:
Some nice trails. Map is availiable at the lodge. Riding can be as easy or hard depending on choice of trail. Good place just for a ride and to work on skills and stuff. Not very far out of town either..(like anything is in fairbanks lol) I would recomend these trails for begginners or someone who just wants to go for a ride.

Recommended Route:
Just head up to the hill.

Summary:
X-country ski trails in the winter, these trails are a BLAST for your MTB in the summer. They are fast, safe, physically challenging and entertaining, making for a great woodland ride. You can make it as physically challenging as you want for a great cardio workout or simply enjoy the woods. Highlights include lots of speed (watch out for moose and an occasional log) and getting air on the "roller coaster" and "black gold" trails. The trails can be ridden by the average rider up to the extreme gear head and are rated "green"(easy) "blue"(moderate) and "black"(difficult) Technically these trails rate at about a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 but for enjoyment and physical challenge this is an 8 out of 10.

Recommended Route:
North on Steese hiway, to Fairhill rd. Then left on Birch Hill Rd to Birch Hill X-county ski trails.
or better yet...
Out my back door through the woods to the Black Gold trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Standard Creek and Death ride course.
