The majority of the trail is singletrack that branches off from the Parcours fitness trail. Mostly smooth-rolling XC-type trail, however if you explore enough there are several sections of fairly technical trail, a few large drops, and some north-shore style gaps hidden in the woods. It's made up of short (less than a mile) interconnecting segments, but there are enough of them that you can ride for a while without ending up on the same trail again. The rolling terrain keeps things interesting, with very few flat sections. You're either climbing or descending, which makes for a great workout and a fun ride. If you don't like to climb on dirt, you can shuttle back uphill by riding up Farrel Rd. or Blue Max st. to the numerous trail entrances.
The trail can be accessed from several spots on Farrel Rd, Blue Max St, behind the BOQ buildings against the woods, from the Parcours Lake picnic area, or behind the sports fields adjacent to the elementary school. In addition to that, if you ride the Parcours fitness trail the MTB trail crosses/joins it in several places so it's a good way to get on to the MTB-oriented segments. The trail is marked mostly by orange tape on the trees, but occasionally by orange flags or yellow blazes. Be alert for walkers on the trail, as the terrain can keep them out of view until the last second. Ride responsibly so these trails aren't shut down!
Summary: I ride these trails a couple times/week during lunch - makes for a good 1-hour workout. Most trails are hard-packed and easy to follow as there are no signs. The trails are fairly technical in spots with at least 4 ravine crossings where you have to use your down speed to make the shoot up the opposite side. Ravines range from 10' to 20' deep with steep entrances/exits. Much of the singletrack is nice and flowing through the trees with some tight turns that can sneak up on you. There is a nice leg-burning climb at Parcours Lake which is roughly a 90' elevation change (that's pretty good for SE Alabama). Most of the trails are located between the elementary school and Lyster Clinic on the east side of Farrel Road. Recently I have marked some additional trails on the west side of Farrel Road which will eventually expand the system into a 6~7 mile loop. The trails east of Farrel Road can be formed into a 4.5 mile "loop" with minimal overlapping of trails. For more information and trail maps, join the RuckerCycling group on yahoogroups; trail maps are located in the files section. As stated in the description, the MB trails overlap the WOC workout trail in spots - BE ALERT FOR JOGGERS ON THE WOC TRAILS where the trails cross and/or overlap.
Recommended Route: Contact me for trail map or get map from RuckerCycling group on yahoogroups. Start behind the "Guesthouse" at the WOC trailhead, follow power line to the north, continue in a CCW direction.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Swayback Trail/Wetumpka
Troy University/Dothan Campus - nothing technical here.
