CHICKASABOGUE PARK
52 reviews
 3.73 of 5

This park in Mobile County has 15 miles of trails for mountain biking. The course is separated into three routes: the long red, the short red, and the yellow. The red and yellow courses are ridden on alternating days of the week. Each course is very well marked. There are three main loops in the park. The most difficult loop, the Beach Loop, is about 7 miles long and is very technical in some places. The Cemetary Loop is fast and open. The Indian Loop is somewhere between with some difficult sections and some fast areas. Almost all of the trail is single track with lots of roots, but few rocks. There has recently been a lot of trail building on the east side of I-65. About 4 miles of newesingletrack has been built recently. Now there is basically a 15 mile loop that you can ride without backtracking or stopping. You only have to ride on the road for a little while! There is a fee of $1.00 per person, per day.

Summary:
Like the last reviewer, I was here on business and brought my bike. This is an extensive, potentially very fun trail system. I was there two evenings in a row and didn't see another cyclist. They do have a disc golf course in the park and there were probably 30-40 people using that, but no mountain bikes. Being the end of the summer and the fact that no one else had been on the trail, I ended up taking out a lot of banana spider webs, some with the spiders right at face level. The trail system looked like it was very well put together and maintained at one time, but it looks like no one rides it or cares anymore. A lot of nice, narrow bridges over swampy stuff, but some are rotting out and looking really sketchy. Lots of roots, but I'm from Houston and am used to riding rooty trails. Some decent gradual up and downhills, but lots of faceslappers and big pinecones on the trail.
Overall, a fun trail system that needs to be ridden more.

Recommended Route:
Got there in the evening both days so only had about an hour to ride. Seems like the trails on the other side of I-65 were a little more fun.

Summary:
I was in town on business and took my bike along to ride this trail for the first time. Park entry is cheap ($1.00), great parking area with restrooms to change cloths and prepare. Park entry was 5 miles from the interstate and had signs pointing out the way. Trail map is useless, but you don't need one. If you get lost on this trail you should see a doctor. Terrain is mild with lots of small elevation changes, I didn't find any climbs longer than about 10 seconds and only a couple short downhill sections where you can get some speed up. It is mostly singletrack but there are a number of bridges, a beach and some small vehicle trails. No real challenging areas, a place marked "Collarbone" was the only real excitement. The terrain varied from pine needles on 95% of trail to sand and a rocky gravel on 5%. I took out three spiders, cleared two vines from by rear tire, took about five sticks in the spokes and realized dry pine branches don't push out of the way like soft oak limbs. Even though there were bike tracks at the beginning that implied people had riden the trail, the trail its self showed no signs of wear or even use. Expect plently of roots, like riding over small speed bumps most of the time, I ride a hardtail and was feeling it a little by the time I left (F/S bike would eat the bumps up no problem). Mostly slow with lots of turns ( I rode 1:35 mins, covered 15 miles and averaged 9.5 MPH). I would recommend this trail to anyone but I probably wouldn't ride it more than a couple times a year, not very exciting. On the other hand, right before leaving I rode a small section of the "Beach" trail and found it to be challenging due to poor maintenance and difficult terrain. But I still enjoyed it.

Sorry so long, but nobody has posted in 2 years so I figured it was worth it.

Summary:
Probably your best bet in Mobile these days. Well maintained, fast single track. Spiders everywhere...if you are the first one on the trail that day...be prepared for a few banana spider face plants in the summer.

Though more or less flat, there is more net elevation change than you'd otherwise expect....and lots of features to keep you interest...such as roots, 2x4 bridges, logs, etc.

Recommended Route:
Burn up the trails at the park entry and head under the I-65 for the interesting stuff. Forget about the trail map available at the office...it looks like my 3 year old made it with crayons.

You'll get disoriented in the trails under the interstate...but to get out of there just keep turning towards the noise of interstate...eventually that will sort you out.

Summary:
Visited this trail over the Thanksgiving holiday (rainy) and the trail was quite damp... drenched in fact. Looks as if the trail has recovered a little since the hurricane. The maps that the park give upon entry really blow, so beware.

Summary:
Get out there an maintain this trail!

Its in bad shape over two months after Hurricance Ivan. I was just visiting, so I can't do trail maintenance myself, but whoever does, is letting this one go to waste.

I couldn't get past the branches getting stuck in my brakes, spokes, etc to ride with enjoyment. It looked like there was an effort to put markers on the main trail, but no effort was put in the trail itself.

Recommended Route:
Entry is hard to find.
