Chief Ladiga Train
5 reviews
 3.4 of 5

This is a Rails-To-Trails project. From what I understand it's not finished. There may be more than the 22 miles listed by now...I didn't do the whole thing today because it got dark. Chief Ladiga Trail is different. It can be done on a road bike or mountain. I did it on my MTB today and was wishing i had my road bike here. It's more like the trail that runs up and down the California coast...without the beach and bikinis. This place looks alot like the Naches Trace in Mississippi but it's narrower and allows no motor traffic. This trail's sorta funny. It does something I've never seen a trail do before. It throws off perception. Downhills look like uphills and vice versa. I stopped at one point on the trail to further examine this phenomenon and was weirded out even more. I was going uphill (i stopped and looked in both directions to confirm this). There was a stream running beside me and it was completely level with the trail. The stream was running in the same direction. Now is it just me, or is water supposed to flow downhill only?????? Anyway, this was a pretty pleasant ride and a good way to get in the miles after a rain. You won't see many people along this path unless you are close to a town. When nearing Jacksonville and Piedmont, you will likely encounter an increase in use. As mentioned before, this trail will be extended when funds are in place. As far as the finished length goes, I have no idea, but it makes for a good mileage ride on any kind of cycle as it is. This is one for the whole family...nothing difficult here...just miles and miles and miles of an old paved railroad bed. One other thing I should mention...you have to stop alot...especially in town. On any leg of the line, you will be hard pressed to find a mile of the trail that isn't interrupted by a stop sign in the automobile's favor.

Summary:
This is Alabama's first extended Rail-Trail and it's quite pretty with streams, lakes, an old bridge going over it and views of open pastures and mountains - the southernmost Appalachians. You can see the state's second highest "peak", Dugger Mountain, from many points along the route. It goes through the college campus of Jacksonville State University and near Germania Springs. The trail is due to connect to the Silver Comet sometime in 2007, enabling a cyclist to go from Weaver, Alabama (near Anniston) to Atlanta, Georgia, a distance of about 100 miles.

Recommended Route:
The section near Piedmont is the prettiest.

Summary:
I was all pumped about pulling my kids in the trailer all the live long day. I started in weaver and headed northeast. We stopped at a little park just past Jacksonville to let the kids play and have some lunch that I had packed. The yellow jackets were tremendous and I kept having to throw gatorade soaked bread far away to bait them elswhere. I rode a little further and headed back. The boys started to fight in the trailer and the yougest eventually fell asleep. Man, that trailer got heavy the last few miles. I didn't think the kids had that much fun but they keep asking to go back. Go figure. All in all the scenry left something to be desired, maybe it gets prettier closer to Peidmont.

Summary:
I don't get the initial description listed here. The trail has little to no up/down hill. It's almost all flat. It is cool in the sense that there are no cars, but there are some areas where you have to stop at a lot of stop signs. After a while it gets kinda boring due to the lack of scenery changes. When you get to the wide open areas you can just flat out hammer, I think it would have been fun to have aero bars. The lenght of the pavement is right at 25 miles, and there is a guy with a snack bar right before you get to the northernmost end. I don't know ho far the unpaved section goes, but it is eventually supposed to hook up with the silver comet trail in Georgia.

Recommended Route:
I started at the southernmost end with my roadbike and rode until the pavement ran out.

Summary:
fun ride for a family or anyone seeking to log some miles on relatively level asphalt. the hills are minimal, and very shallow, but you can get up to speed in several places. just a long, long, wide, wide asphalt sidewalk. a fun ride for the afternoon, and perfect for what it was intended - a leisurely ride through north alabama.
