Brazos Bend State Park

Jeep tracks. All the singletrack I came across were "foot traffic only".
Summary: First trail my husband and I ever tried was Double Lake on two cheap $100 bikes, which KILLED us, so we looked for something a bit easier. The crushed granite trails at Brazos around the lakes are nice "meandering" type trails with tons of wildlife to look at. Definitely bring a camera. If you want something a smidge more technical, try the equestrian trails at the very very back of the park. They are not graveled over and its about 8 miles through the trees, not tight, no jumps, but more difficult than the other trails due to the raw nature. Beware though, not only did we see docile deer, but we ran across a pack of wild hogs which can be dangerous. There is a little side trail off to the right of the main trail on the last leg, this is the most technical trail here. As soon as you go onto that trail, there is a HUGE drop where you have to jump a little creek then ascend up the other side. Very difficult if you have no experience. Also, this trail is a dead end so be prepared to do the descending and asceding on your way back. We just bought new bikes this past weekend (much lighter, better bikes) so we'll be back out at Brazos next weekend. This place is super fun if you're a nature type weekend warrior. If you're more experienced you might like Double Lake better.
Recommended Route: For beginners, start at Elm Lake trial by the restrooms, take spillway trail to 40-acre lake (take 40-acre lake trail to the left unless you want to make a short climb) then come back up spillway trail which leads you back into Elm Lake, go right on that trail, then take the Pilant Slough trail to mix it up a little and see some nice wildlife, come out by the recreation center and take the trail back towards Elm Lake. This comes out to a 4mi. plus trail that's really nice to ride.
For someone tired of the granite "roads", go back by Hale Lake and jump on Whiteoak Trail, take a right on Bluestem Trail, follow until it becomes Riverview Trail (don't let the name fool you, we saw no river), follow this trail until it becomes Sawmill Trail, then Bayou Trail. Bayou Trail is where you can branch off to Creekwood Lake Trail if you want a more challenging ride, or just keep on Bayou Trail, cross the road, ride around Hale Lake and finish up at the beginning of Whiteoak Trail. This is a good 10-16 mile trail depending on how you go, but its definitely worth it if you like the area but need something a bit more challenging.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Double Lake if you're experienced.
Anahuac if you want something easier and just as much nature.

Summary: This is just a flat ride on gravel, there's nothing special about it this trail. It's a nice family ride, but not for a mountain biker. All the singletrack here is foot-traffic only.
Recommended Route: Ride this thing called the loop or something like that here. It's about a 1/2 a mile long and has a few roots, it's the best trail here.
Other recommended trails in the same area: The Anthills
Memorial Park's Ho Chi Minh Trail

Summary: Brazos Bend is a nice place to relax and spend some time riding through the scenic outdoors. There is nothing technical (go to the Ant Hills or Clay Canyon for that), but the trails are still fun and I really enjoy them. Don't bother going if its has rained in the area in the last 2 to 3 days unless you like swimming in mud.
Recommended Route: find a dirt path and ride it!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Clay Canyon is very close, Ant hills

Summary: This is a very average trail for the serious rider, but is a good ride for families with kids. There is a lot of nature and wildlife to look at. Beware of the gators though. They like to sun bath on the paths and right on the edge of the water. Check out my pics from the ride. http://www.jacksonville.net/~jgandy2/Brazos/index.htm
Recommended Route: Several to choose from. Just get a map and pick one. I started at the first parking lot.
