Arbor Hills Park

This trail is a 2 mile clockwise loop that winds around a 25 acre section of the park. It is fairly twisty in the trees and has several off-camber up and down sections. The lap ends with two sustained climbs out in the open area. The trail is suitable for all skill levels. It is not a technical trail but can be an aerobic challenge.
Facilities include a beautiful pavilion complex with picnic tables, barbeque grills and restrooms. There is a water fountain by the restrooms. Also, there is a 1.25 mile paved trail for jogging, dog walking (remember your leash) or warm-up/cool-down laps. For the kids, there is a terrific playground near the trailhead.
Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is located in the 6700 block of Parker Road in far west Plano. To get to the park, take Parker Road west past the Dallas North Tollway. The park entrance is a few blocks west of Midway Road on the north side of Parker.
To get to the trailhead: From the parking lot, take the paved trail south around the pavilion complex and playground. The trailhead is on your left and is marked by a large white sign with the IMBA rules of the trail. If you cross the large bridge on the paved trail, you've gone too far.
Summary: I actually like this trail despite some lame reviews. My inlaws just live down the hill from the park so it's an easy get away for a workout. The trail is 100 percent single track with a lot of twisty turns through the woods that keep you constantly working. There are some decent climbs and fast winding downhill sections. The trail is faily smooth with a fair share of roots and stones to keep you on your toes.
For cross country types and weekend warriors, its an enjoyable ride and by picking up your pace can be as hard as you want to make it because there is not a lot of time to rest.
Recommended Route: One loop, trail marker says to ride clockwise.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Northshore at Grapevine

Summary: I live about 5 minutes from this trail and ride it about 3 times a week. Ignore the trolls, this trail can be a lot of fun. This can be a scary fast trail once you really know it, and you can build pretty challenging routes if you get creative. The trees get pretty tight once you start turning the wick up.
Trust me it really does get your adreneline pumpin when you start taking these corners as fast as they can be taken there is a lot of grip in some spots. You can get some serious lean in the turns. It can get pretty crowded .. so stay on your toes. Chasing down other bikers is the best part .... there are lots of good places to practice manuals and such in the parking lot.... like those biofilter things. The two mile loop is like a mountain bike speedway with it's heavily banked ruts and hard packed soil with broad run-offs.
Recommended Route: Do the loop once then do it again, but cut accross the creek about 2/3 of the way through. There are two ways to cross the creek one tricky and the other really tricky. Cut left after you hit the pavement back onto the dirt and look for the big hill. Climb the big hill. It is a nice challenge for intermediate riders. Then from the top of the hill there are a lot of different ways to go. You can cut left at the first trail you see and end up at the bottom of the hill again only a little further down. Or you can go down the hill again, as it is sorta fun. You can take it pretty fast in a full suspension bike. The trails on the backside are pretty unexciting. It is more challenging to build routes that go up and down the big hill and the service road that runs accross it as there are several different routes up and down it.
Other recommended trails in the same area: When I don't get off work at 6 I like to hit Erwin Park, Rowlett or Grapevine

Summary: When I first found this park a few months ago, I only ever rode the loop that everyone else rides. Well, I got to exploring and found out there is a ton of trails on the north & west sides of the park. You just have to explore. The best way to get to these is to turn right from the parking lot and taken any of the dirt trails leading off to the right. You can ultimately end up in a veritable no-man's land along the railroad tracks.. bring a spare tube & a pump!
Recommended Route: From the parking lot, turn right on the concrete path. At the bottom, before the first bridge, turn right. There is a smaller concrete path that has a trail leading off it to the right. This will take you on a great adventure around the periphary of the park. Many trails to explore.

Summary: I'm fairly new to this area and had no idea there were nice trails here! I rode Erwin twice this past weekend and didn't expect much from Arbor Hills. The loop seems short, but just do multiple laps, then it gets fun. One bummer. . . can't go too fast, I almost plowed over joggers, then again on the second lap around (same people too!! sorry!). I recommend this trail as a nice weekly warmup to bigger weekend rides. I will definetly ride this much more often! This is definetly for beginners and intermediate riders. The facilites are very well kept. Take the whole family out and stroll down the concrete path after your ride, or have a picnic.
Recommended Route: Standard 2mi loop.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Erwin Park, McKinney
