Rocky Hill Ranch

This place has trails for all levels, easier doubletracks that traverse the length of the ranch and tough, twisting singletracks that wind through the pine forest over dry creek beds. Makes for a nice day of riding, whatever your skill level.
Summary: The trail head is rough and once you get past Fat Chuck's Demise it is good for a beginner. There were no maps when we checked in but the Map really wouldn't help because there aren't enough trail markers up. We would start off on one trail and ended on another trail without knowing how or when it happened. There twists and turns and ups and downs that were managable for this beginner. There were orange/yellow ties to let you know you were on a trail. Take plenty of water because there was no water at the water stations on the day we went. If you are tired there is always the service roads you can go back on when you had enough and want to get back to your car. We will go back but when it is a little warmer because today it was COLD.

Summary: Well I was really pumped up about riding this trail after looking at all the good reviews on here. I was pretty dissapointed in driving all the way out to Smithville to ride this trail. There is nothing technical about it and found myself bored most of the way. I became tired of looking at the map after the end of each trail. Dont get me wrong the place is really nice and well maintained but no crazy jumps or anything that was daring. A few places were fun and I actually got up to 30 MPH on a downhill. I probably will not ever go back but it was nice to put in a bunch of miles.
Recommended Route: All of them to keep it interesting.

Summary: I really like this place, it has a good variety of terrain and trail types: Long rocky downhills, easy double tracks, curvey flat single tracks through the woods, and best of all various hard pack and pine needle downhill runs. Don't short change yourself, go all the way to the back of the park - Avenue of the pines, and some of the fence line runs are wide open, long downhills for big speed with rolling terrains for a mini-coaster like ride. I will definitely go back soon. Our favorite hair-raiser run was the last mile on the way back from Station 1: HB to SSS to ME to GH, back to parking lot. Its the designated 'Easy Route', maybe that's going up - but go balls out down it for a thrill, but be careful, many hidden mini-drops (scarey but fun) and you can get going real fast.

Summary: Just spent Saturday and Sunday riding the trails (March 1 and 2) Awesome trails in a great environment. As the other posts state, there are many different types of trails. First 1/2 mile after the meadow might be intimidating if you go the edge of the property as it is rocky climbs. Don't let this be frustrating as once that is behind you, there are great trails for every skill level. Definitely recommend a bike with suspension but you can do fine after the first section as stated above. Water stations are very helpful. The map provided at the trail head sucks so don't get bogged down in your bearings. Just ride with a general sense of direction. We got decent cell phone service from the parking lot.
We did trails on Saturday, spent the night at Buescher State Park and rode again on Sunday and probably didn't cover all the trails. Once the saloon part gets open, this will definitely be THE weekend spot for area enthusiasts.

Summary: At first I didn't like these trails. The stuff in the beginning is not well marked, and it took me awhile to get going. Some of the trails were marked off for a run that was taking place the next day. Eventually I got onto the big (16 mile) loop, and some of these trails are great. Favorite trails included: Off the lip, Longhorn Loop, Tris Cross, Black Trac, and The Wall. These trails are a mostly sand surface which was luckily pretty packed down when I rode it. If the corners had been looser it could have made for a long day. Also, the trails are called "Rocky" hill, but don't go expecting Barton Creek type rocks. The rocks are small, loose rocks that suck your energy on climbs. Oh yeah, the climbs. There's alot more climbing here than I expected. From the road and where you park it doesn't look like there would be much, but that's very deceptive. There's even some fairly long, grind it out type of climbs. Overall a well designed trail network that is worth the drive and the price($8 for the day).
Recommended Route: Get on the 16 mile loop and go!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Heard Bluff Creek is good. I'll be heading there next.
