The normal bike trail is mostly easy fire trails that can be easily negotiated with any bike. However if you do find the "goat trails", you will be in a time of your life. The trail is about 3 feet from the edge of a cliff (150 ft. drop) that is covered with razor sharp rocks, ruts, and all other sorts of hazardous items. Psycholoically and physically very intimitating. I do not recommend this trail if your trail handling skills are not up to par. This trail can get you killed.
From Austin, go to 290W (opposite of "Ben White" 71) out to the city. Stay on the highway for about 40 minutes, which will lead you to Perdernales Park. Head up to the top of the mountain. From the parking lot on top of the hill, follow the camping trails until ou reach several trails leading to singletrack (hard to find, but its true, these trails are for bikes). You will be eventually be led to the cliffs where the trail continues.
Summary: Wolf Mt. Loop is a wide technically easy 7 mile trail with a number of hills for a good aerobic workout. This trail is best for a beginner looking to get into shape.
Traumel Crossing is a 4 mile Loop that take you down a steep hill to the Pedernales River which you must cross, up a steep hill and then around a relatively flat single/double track area in the back of the park. This trail is a short fun trail for a beginner.
Recommended Route: The secret is to find the horse trails. Start at the parking lot for the Wolf Mt. Trail. Take the gravel/dirt road heading South from the parking lot. Take South Loop through the pipeline area to the road. Instead of going right as the "Horse -->" sign suggests, go left towards Wolf Mt. the right towards Jones Springs. Then head straight back. I would guess this is about a 9 mile out and back. It's mostly fun single track and plenty of hills for climbing and descending. There are enough technical areas to challenge most people. All but the fittest, bravest riders will be walking quite a few short sections.
The other option is to follow the "Horse -->" sign. This will take you on many more miles of horse trails. The trails around the North Loop are relatively flat and easy.

Summary: This trail doesn't have a great deal of challenges. However, the route is not frequently traversed as spread trails go. It is a good respite if you are traveling into San Antonio from the west. It consists of a pesky little uphill section, some rock gardens, plenty of single-tack, a number of root-busters, and just general solitude.
I do recommend it as it satisfies the savage MTB beast!

Recommended Route: There are only two. I recommend both in one afternoon.

Summary: first, i'll say i'm new to the sport(about 2 months) and at a novice level. wolfe mountain trail is mostly double track gravel roads with small stream crossings. for a beginner, riding this whole trail can be kinda hard(about 7 miles), but i'd say overall its a very easy trail. i have rode the single track section both ways and it is much more of a challenge(rocks, roots, drop offs). i have to walk through a couple of sections (one had about a three/four foot drop), but it is still fun. i found what the first poster described as the "goat trails", and yeah that is kinda a hard section as well, but not near as scary as the first poster made it out to be. just take it slow and walk what you can't do and you'll be fine. i don't have other trail experience, but i think this is a good trail to get out in nature and relax a bit. i see alot of families on the trail breaking kids into mountain biking.
i would not drive a great distance just to bike this trail. pedernales falls state park, however, is worth a drive to visit. go ahead and bike, but be sure to hike to the falls and check it out. this is a nice park with great scenery, camping, swimming, etc.
Recommended Route: if you ride the loop counter-clockwise, you will hit the single track going mostly downhiil, which makes this portion much better. otherwise it doesn't really matter.
Other recommended trails in the same area: hey! recommend some to me! i'm the new one.

Summary: Pretty good variety of technical spots, a bit too much continuous uphill for me, some great twisty single lane shaded areas near Jones Spring. Trammel Crossing is more secluded but watch out for massive erosion on trails. Good day trip. Great scenery at falls. Try it for yourself.
Recommended Route: Do both Wolf Mtn Trail (best near Jones Spring) and Trammel Crossing trail (but must walk bikes thru rushing water) for a fullish day.

Summary: I rode the WOlf Mountain Trail on a very hot day in June . There is little shade at all on that trail , except for the area past Wolf "Mountain" where the wide jeep trail turns into single track , but a good mile of single track to 6 miles of flat jeep trails does not do it much justice . Nice overview look from part the trail , however , the scenery is not that great . I would not recomend the trail above the Tramel Crossing . I hiked part of it and it is just another jeep trail with little or no shade , and the only scenery is the shrubby ceder trees .... yawn . I believe I found what the first poster described as the "Goat Trails" .They are a nice offshoot from the East side of the Wolf Mountain Trail . To get to them , just ride off through the Primative Camping Area . There will be a sign for it . There are extended trails through there that are more fun then the main trail . I only incountered a couple of spots where the trail ran up to the clift face , 3 feet away as the first poster described . Just approach those sections very slow and walk your bike through them . As an intermediate rider I felt those trails were safe as long as you use common sence .
Recommended Route: Wolf Mountain Trail
