Summary:
Jarring! Very rocky hill country ride, with great vistas and some short climbs. Saw a bald eagle on the ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Also rode Dante's Trail in Purgatory Natural Area in San Marcos. Great little network of trails.

Summary:
Rode Madrone trail for the first time over the weekend. Just eough rocks to keep you on your toes. Lots of fun, did not see a biker the whole trip. Headed off in the correct direction from the get-go, but somehow made a wrong turn somewhere and ended re-doing some of the trail. Stll spent a good 2.5 hrs just riding around. Nothing really to nasty, but i would'nt take a beginner there.

Recommended Route:
Lost from get-go.

Summary:
I'm a regular at Madrone. Love to race it. 8 mile loop. Down is a labyrinth, return a straight shot. Clear markings throughout. Beautiful vistas. Sharp turns. Be prepared for an intense drop and climb in the first 20 minutes of the route. Hellava introduction. Then, it's a nimble negotiation of rock gardens and switchback trails. There are 2 crux rock gardens that need be negotiated to keep the roll. One is on the downside after you cross a service road and shoot a rock wall climb, and the other is near the end at the boat docks. Pick your line........ it can be very unforgiving of error. It's a rough trail, but it keeps me honest. 1 hr 15 min if you man up...... most others 2 hrs.

Cussed the entire time on trail. Challenging, some technical areas, some cool scenic areas. Other than that, came out of it alive.

Summary:
Great training trail for a weekend getaway from Austin, San Marcos and San Antonio. Nice flow, and good shade for the most part. Beautiful vistas and the lake is nearby for a quick cool down. Bueno....
